If you live in Tokyo or visit Japan frequently, U.S. credit cards can be surprisingly rewarding for everyday spending.
You can earn up to 6X ThankYou Points at restaurants, 5X Membership Rewards on airfare, and 3X–4X points across many travel and transportation categories.
But there is one Japan-specific strategy that can make U.S. credit cards even more useful here:
Apple Pay Suica.
The key is that American Express treats eligible Apple Pay Suica reloads as Transit purchases. This makes it possible to earn 3X or up to 4X Membership Rewards when funding Suica with the right card.
Once loaded, Suica can be used for much more than trains and subways. Convenience stores, drugstores, department stores, cafés, restaurants, and many other merchants across Japan accept Suica. This effectively extends the Transit category bonus to many everyday purchases that might otherwise earn only 1X.
All of the U.S. cards recommended in this guide have no foreign transaction fees, making them suitable for spending in Japan.
If your goal is earning Membership Rewards, Apple Pay Suica can become the center of your everyday spending strategy in Japan. If you prefer Atmos Rewards, the Atmos Rewards Summit Visa Infinite offers another strong option: qualifying foreign purchases earn 3X Atmos Points, while card spending also earns Atmos Rewards Status Points.

American Express Business Gold: Transit must finish among your top two eligible 4X categories for the billing cycle to earn 4X. The 4X rate is also subject to the card’s annual spending cap.
Suica: A Suica card has a ¥20,000 stored-value limit, making this strategy best suited to everyday and medium-size purchases.
Citi Strata Elite: Eligible restaurant purchases normally earn 3X TYP, while qualifying purchases during Citi Nights earn 6X.
Atmos Rewards Summit Visa Infinite: Qualifying foreign purchases earn 3X Atmos points, and card spending also earns Atmos Rewards Status Points.
📱 Apple Pay Suica: Turn Everyday Spending in Japan Into 3X–Up to 4X MR
The biggest advantage of Apple Pay Suica in Japan is not simply using it for trains. It is the ability to extend the American Express Transit bonus to a much wider range of everyday purchases.
The reason is straightforward: American Express treats eligible Apple Pay Suica reloads as Transit purchases.
The American Express Green Card earns 3X Membership Rewards on eligible Transit purchases, which means:
American Express Green → Apple Pay Suica → 3X MR
Transit is also an eligible 4X category on the American Express Business Gold Card. If Transit finishes as one of your Top 2 Eligible Categories for that billing cycle, eligible Suica reloads can earn:
American Express Business Gold → Apple Pay Suica → Up to 4X MR
In other words, Suica itself does not have a special Membership Rewards bonus. The strategy works because eligible Suica reloads are categorized as Transit.
The real advantage comes after the reload.
Suica is widely accepted at convenience stores, drugstores, department stores, cafés, restaurants, and many other merchants throughout Japan. Instead of earning only 1X on a general purchase, you can potentially extend the Transit category’s 3X or up to 4X MR earning rate to those everyday purchases.
This can also help avoid uncertainty around Merchant Category Codes (MCCs), particularly at restaurants located inside department stores or large shopping complexes.
Suica has a maximum stored balance of ¥20,000, so this strategy is best suited to everyday spending rather than large purchases.

🥇 American Express Business Gold: Suica Can Earn Up to 4X MR
The American Express Business Gold Card is the most interesting card in this strategy.
Transit is one of the Business Gold’s eligible 4X categories. When transit finishes among your top two eligible spending categories for the billing cycle, you can earn:
Up to 4X Membership Rewards
That creates a particularly useful setup in Japan:
Business Gold → Apple Pay Suica → Everyday spending
Suppose you are buying ¥15,000 worth of merchandise at a Tokyo department store.
Paying directly with a credit card that has no department-store bonus could leave you with only the base earning rate.
If the store accepts Suica, however, you can fund Suica first and use the stored balance to pay.
The department-store purchase effectively becomes part of your Suica spending strategy.
There is one major condition:
Transit must finish among your Business Gold’s top two eligible 4X categories for that billing cycle.
So Suica should not be described as an automatic 4X transaction for every Business Gold cardholder.
For someone who lives in Japan and puts substantial spending through Suica, however, this can be an extremely useful way to earn MR points.
The main practical limitation is Suica’s ¥20,000 balance cap.
That makes the strategy ideal for frequent everyday purchases rather than very large transactions.

🥈 American Express Green: The Simpler 3X Suica Option
The American Express Green Card is the simpler version of the same strategy.
The card earns:
3X MR on transit
3X MR on travel
3X MR at restaurants worldwide
That makes it particularly well suited to Tokyo, where trains and other public transportation are part of everyday life.
Using it to fund Apple Pay Suica gives you a straightforward:
American Express Green → Apple Pay Suica → 3X MR
There is no need to worry about whether transit finishes among your top two spending categories.
For someone living in Tokyo who wants a simple U.S. Amex setup, the Green Card is therefore extremely versatile: 3X dining, 3X travel, 3X transit, and a very useful Suica strategy.

🍣 Suica Can Also Solve the Restaurant MCC Problem
This is one of my favorite reasons to use Suica in Japan.
Credit card issuers generally determine bonus categories using the Merchant Category Code (MCC) assigned to a merchant.
That means eating at a restaurant does not necessarily guarantee that your credit card issuer will recognize the transaction as dining.
This can become particularly relevant at restaurants located inside Japanese department stores, hotels, food halls, and large shopping complexes.
For example, you might eat at a restaurant inside a Tokyo department store and expect:
American Express Gold → 4X MR
But if the transaction is processed under the department store or another merchant category, you may not receive the dining bonus you expected.
If that restaurant accepts Suica, there is another option:
American Express Business Gold → Suica → Up to 4X MR
or:
American Express Green → Suica → 3X MR
You no longer need to rely on the restaurant’s MCC for the credit card bonus.
That is one of the biggest advantages of using Apple Pay Suica with U.S. credit cards in Japan.
💳 Only Want Membership Rewards? Start With Suica
If my goal were simply to accumulate as many Membership Rewards points as possible while living in Tokyo, I would keep the strategy relatively simple.
For everyday purchases, my first question would be:
“Can I pay with Suica?”
If yes:
American Express Business Gold → Suica → Up to 4X MR
or:
American Express Green → Suica → 3X MR
That can cover a huge portion of normal Tokyo life:
- Convenience stores
- Drugstores
- Department stores
- Station shopping centers
- Cafés
- Some supermarkets
- Restaurants
- Everyday retail purchases
For a restaurant that I know will code correctly:
American Express Gold → 4X MR
For a restaurant where I am uncertain about the MCC:
Business Gold → Suica → Up to 4X MR
For flights booked directly with an airline:
American Express Platinum → 5X MR
And for everyday purchases where I simply want predictable MR earnings without worrying about the Business Gold’s top-two rule:
Green → Suica → 3X MR
That creates a remarkably complete Membership Rewards ecosystem for everyday life in Japan.
🌏 Atmos Rewards Summit: 3X in Japan + Status Points
If you collect Atmos Rewards instead of Membership Rewards, the Atmos Rewards Summit Visa Infinite is particularly compelling in Japan.
The card earns:
3X Atmos points on qualifying foreign purchases
For a U.S.-issued cardholder spending in Japan, there is no need to optimize individual categories such as department stores, drugstores, supermarkets, or general retail.
A qualifying foreign purchase earns 3X.
Even better, Summit card spending also earns:
1 Atmos Rewards Status Point per US$2 spent
That creates a very different value proposition from a normal catch-all card.
When a purchase is too large for Suica’s ¥20,000 balance limit, the options become particularly interesting:
Atmos Rewards Summit → 3X Atmos points + Status Points
Capital One Venture X → 2X Miles
Citi Strata Elite → 1.5X TYP
If you are actively pursuing Atmos Rewards status, putting significant Japan spending on Summit can therefore serve two purposes at once: earning redeemable Atmos points and progressing toward elite status.
🍣 Dining in Tokyo: 4X MR or Up to 6X TYP
For a normal restaurant that codes correctly as dining, the American Express Gold Card is one of the simplest choices:
4X Membership Rewards at restaurants worldwide
Other options include:
American Express Green → 3X MR
Citi Strata Premier → 3X TYP
Chase Sapphire Reserve → 3X UR
Capital One Savor → 3% cash back
But Citi Strata Elite has an unusual advantage:
Citi Nights.
Eligible restaurant purchases normally earn:
3X TYP
During qualifying Citi Nights hours:
6X TYP
Because Citi Nights is based on Eastern Time, the corresponding hours in Japan shift when U.S. daylight saving time begins or ends.
So a practical Tokyo dining strategy looks like this:
Normal restaurant → American Express Gold 4X MR
Citi Nights → Citi Strata Elite 6X TYP
Department-store restaurant with uncertain MCC → Suica up to 4X MR
🛒 Supermarkets in Japan
For Japanese supermarkets, two straightforward options are:
Citi Strata Premier → 3X TYP
Capital One Savor → 3% cash back
One important distinction for U.S. Amex cardholders is that the American Express Gold Card’s supermarket bonus applies to U.S. supermarkets.
You should therefore not expect 4X MR simply because you are shopping at a supermarket in Tokyo.
If the Japanese supermarket accepts Suica, however, the calculation changes again:
Business Gold → Suica → Up to 4X MR
Green → Suica → 3X MR
If my priority were Membership Rewards, I would usually look at Suica first.
🚃 Transportation in Japan: Business Gold Up to 4X, Green and Ink Preferred 3X
Transportation is one of the easiest bonus categories to use in Japan. Eligible trains, subways, taxis, and other transportation purchases can already earn bonus rewards directly, so you do not need to use Suica just to earn a transit or travel bonus.
The American Express Business Gold Card can earn up to 4X Membership Rewards on eligible Transit purchases. Transit must finish as one of your Top 2 Eligible Categories for that billing cycle to receive the 4X rate.
The American Express Green Card is simpler. Eligible Transit purchases earn 3X Membership Rewards without a Top 2 category requirement.
If you prefer Chase Ultimate Rewards, the Chase Ink Business Preferred earns 3X Ultimate Rewards on eligible Travel purchases.
What makes the two American Express cards especially useful in Japan is Apple Pay Suica. Suica reloads are treated as Transit purchases, which means you can also earn:
American Express Business Gold → Apple Pay Suica → Up to 4X MR
American Express Green → Apple Pay Suica → 3X MR
Once the money is loaded onto Suica, it can be used for much more than transportation. Convenience stores, drugstores, department stores, cafés, restaurants, and many other merchants across Japan accept Suica.
That is the real advantage of this strategy: Apple Pay Suica can extend the Transit category’s 3X or up to 4X MR earning potential to everyday purchases that might otherwise earn only 1X.
✈️ Buying Flights From Japan
When buying airfare directly from an airline, several U.S. cards work well:
American Express Platinum → 5X MR
Chase Sapphire Reserve → 4X UR
American Express Gold → 3X MR
American Express Green → 3X MR
Ink Business Preferred → 3X UR
Citi Strata Premier → 3X TYP
If you simply want to maximize Membership Rewards, Platinum’s 5X rate on eligible flights booked directly with airlines is the natural starting point.
But if you need UR or TYP for a specific redemption, choosing another card can still make sense.
🏨 Hotels in Japan
For hotels booked directly:
Chase Sapphire Reserve → 4X UR
Other useful options include:
American Express Green → 3X MR
Ink Business Preferred → 3X UR
Citi Strata Premier → 3X TYP
If you are staying at Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, or IHG, however, it is also worth comparing the return from that hotel’s U.S. co-branded credit card.
A hotel card can make more sense than a general travel card depending on the hotel program and your elite-status strategy.
🎬 Entertainment and Larger Purchases
Capital One Savor earns:
3% cash back on eligible entertainment
as well as 3% at eligible restaurants and grocery stores.
For general purchases that do not fit another bonus category—or purchases that are simply too large for Suica’s ¥20,000 stored-value limit—I would look at:
Atmos Rewards Summit → 3X Atmos points + Status Points
Capital One Venture X → 2X Miles
Citi Strata Elite → 1.5X TYP
Which one makes sense depends primarily on which rewards currency you are trying to build.
💱 Always Pay in JPY
There is one rule I follow regardless of which U.S. credit card I’m using.
If a payment terminal in Japan asks whether I want to pay in:
JPY or USD
I choose:
JPY.
Choosing USD can trigger Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC), where the merchant or payment processor converts the transaction into dollars before charging your card.
That conversion rate may be less favorable.
The simple rule is:
Spending in Japan → Pay in JPY
and let your card network handle the currency conversion.
🏁 Bottom Line: In Japan, Ask “Can I Pay With Suica?”
There are plenty of strong U.S. credit cards for spending in Japan.
American Express Gold earns 4X MR at eligible restaurants worldwide. Citi Strata Elite can earn 6X TYP during Citi Nights. American Express Platinum earns 5X MR on eligible airfare booked directly with airlines. Chase Sapphire Reserve earns 4X on flights and hotels booked directly.
But the feature that makes Japan different is Apple Pay Suica.
For many convenience stores, drugstores, department stores, restaurants, and everyday retailers, you can potentially turn otherwise ordinary spending into:
American Express Business Gold → Apple Pay Suica → Up to 4X MR
or:
American Express Green → Apple Pay Suica → 3X MR
It can even help avoid the uncertainty of restaurant MCC coding inside Japanese department stores and other large establishments.
So if I’m trying to earn Membership Rewards while living in Tokyo, my first question often isn’t:
“What bonus category is this merchant?”
It’s:
“Can I pay with Suica?”
For purchases beyond Suica’s practical limits, the Atmos Rewards Summit Visa Infinite provides another unusually strong Japan strategy:
3X Atmos points on qualifying foreign purchases + Status Points from card spending.
That leaves two especially simple ways to approach everyday spending in Japan:
Membership Rewards strategy → Build around Apple Pay Suica
Atmos Rewards strategy → Build around Atmos Rewards Summit
Then add American Express Gold for 4X dining, Citi Strata Elite for Citi Nights, and American Express Platinum for 5X airfare as needed.
