Finnair Buy Avios Guide: Sale History, Cost & Transfers to BA / Qatar
Since Finnair Plus adopted Avios, buying Finnair Avios has become much more useful than simply topping up an account for Finnair-operated flights.
Purchased Avios can be moved across the wider Avios ecosystem, allowing you to buy through Finnair first and later decide whether to book through British Airways, Qatar Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, or Finnair Plus.
That flexibility makes Finnair particularly interesting whenever it runs a strong direct-discount sale.

🔥 November 2026 Finnair Avios Sale: Up to 50% Off
Finnair Plus is currently offering one of its strongest Buy Avios promotions.
The promotion runs from:
November 2–16, 2026
Members receive a discount based on the number of Avios purchased, plus Tier Points equal to 10% of the purchased Avios.

50% Off Is Much Better Than a 50% Bonus
This distinction is important because Finnair frequently alternates between:
Bonus Avios
and
direct discounts.
Suppose the regular price buys 100K Avios.
With a:
50% Bonus
you pay the full price for 100K and receive 150K Avios.
With a:
50% Discount
you receive the original 100K Avios while paying only half of the regular purchase price.
So even though both promotions contain the number “50%,” the resulting cost per Avios is very different.
For Finnair Avios sales, I pay much more attention to the discount percentage than the headline bonus percentage.
💵 My Price: 200K Avios for US$2,170
I logged in to my own Finnair Plus account during this promotion to check the actual purchase price.
For:
200,000 Avios
Finnair displayed a regular price of:
US$4,340
with a 50% discount of:
−US$2,170
for a displayed final price of:
US$2,170.

The displayed cost works out to:
US$2,170 ÷ 200,000 = US$0.01085 per Avios
or approximately:
1.085¢ per Avios.
That means the equivalent acquisition cost for 100K Avios is about:
US$1,085.
For purchased Avios, that is an extremely competitive price.
The Displayed Currency Is Not Necessarily the Settlement Currency
There is one important detail when using Finnair Shop.
The website allows you to display prices in different currencies, but Finnair Shop states that:
transactions are ultimately processed in EUR regardless of the selected display currency.
So even though my account displayed:
US$2,170
the final effective cost can still be affected by:
- the EUR transaction amount,
- your card issuer’s exchange rate,
- and any foreign transaction fee.
For that reason, 1.085¢ per Avios should be treated as the cost based on the displayed USD price.
Your true acquisition cost should ultimately be calculated from the amount posted to your credit card.
📈 Finnair Buy Avios Promotion History
Finnair Plus switched to Avios in March 2024.
I therefore only compare promotions from the Avios era below rather than mixing them with the old Finnair Plus Points currency.

The historical pattern is clear:
A larger bonus percentage does not necessarily mean a lower cost per Avios.
For example, Finnair offered a:
70% Bonus
in 2024.
That sounds stronger than a 50% discount, but the effective acquisition cost was still around:
1.34¢ per Avios.
By comparison, the November 2024:
50% Off
sale brought the cost down to roughly:
1.13¢ per Avios.
My November 2026 price is even lower at approximately:
1.085¢ per Avios.
So my general benchmark for Finnair Buy Avios promotions is:
Typical Bonus → No need to rush
40% Off → Worth evaluating
50% Off → Historical low-price territory
Actual historical costs vary with Finnair pricing, currency movements, and payment method, so the promotion percentage alone should never be the only comparison.
⚠️ Who Is Eligible for the November 2026 Sale?
This promotion is not available to someone who creates a brand-new Finnair Plus account after seeing the sale.
The main requirements are:

The 50 Avios minimum balance is particularly easy to overlook.
Finnair also requires a Finnair Plus account to be at least:
30 days old
before it can be linked to another Avios loyalty program.
That means creating a Finnair Plus account only after a major sale appears may be too late to move a few Avios in from another program and become eligible immediately.
📌 The Annual Buy Avios Limit Was Reset for This Sale
The November 2026 promotion also includes an unusual provision:
the annual Buy Avios limit is reset for this offer.
Even if you purchased Finnair Avios earlier in 2026 and had already reached the normal annual purchase limit, this promotion allows eligible members to purchase up to another:
200,000 Avios.
That can be particularly valuable for heavy Avios users.
However, this is a:
special rule for the November 2026 promotion.
Do not assume future Finnair sales will also reset the annual purchase limit.
🏆 The Sale Also Includes 10% Tier Points
In addition to the purchase discount, Finnair is awarding Tier Points equal to:
10% of the number of Avios purchased.
For example:

Buying the maximum:
200K Avios
therefore also earns:
20K Tier Points.
That adds meaningful value for someone already pursuing or renewing Finnair Plus status.
However, Finnair specifically states that these promotional Tier Points do not count as Tier Points earned from Finnair flights for the separate Platinum Lumo flight requirement.
So the Tier Point bonus is useful for general status qualification, but it cannot replace required Finnair flight activity for Platinum Lumo.
🔄 Finnair Avios Can Be Moved 1:1 to Other Programs
This is the main reason I find Finnair Buy Avios promotions so interesting.
The Avios you purchase do not need to stay in Finnair Plus.
Finnair Plus can link to Avios programs including:
- British Airways Club
- Iberia Club
- Aer Lingus AerClub
- Vueling Club
Transfers are:
1:1
and:
free.
Avios normally move almost instantly between linked accounts.
That means Avios purchased from Finnair at a low acquisition cost can later be moved to another program when you find a better award there.
Qatar Airways Requires One Extra Step
Finnair Plus currently cannot link directly to:
Qatar Airways Privilege Club.
Instead, you can use:
Finnair Plus → British Airways Club → Qatar Airways Privilege Club
Finnair to BA is:
1:1
and BA to Qatar is also:
1:1.
So if you buy Finnair Avios for approximately:
1.085¢ each
and later move them through BA to Qatar, your original acquisition cost remains essentially the same.
In practical terms, a strong Finnair Buy Avios sale can also become a low-cost way to acquire:
Qatar Avios.
Account-Linking Rules
Your Finnair Plus account needs to be at least:
30 days old
before you can link it to another Avios program.
Your account information also needs to match.
Finnair Plus Basic members can currently transfer up to:
1,000,000 Avios across all linked programs over a rolling 12-month period.
Both directions count toward the same shared limit.
Other Finnair Plus elite tiers currently do not have this 12-month transfer cap.
✈️ What Can You Do With Purchased Finnair Avios?
The best use does not have to be a Finnair flight.
For example:

The point is that buying Finnair Avios should not be viewed as:
“I want to fly Finnair, so I should buy Finnair Avios.”
A better way to think about it is:
When Finnair becomes one of the cheapest places to acquire Avios, buy through Finnair first and move the Avios to the program that offers the best award later.
⏱️ How Long Do Purchased Finnair Avios Take to Post?
Finnair officially states:
1–3 days after purchase.
Some purchases may post much faster, but I would not rely on immediate posting.
If you are looking at the last Business Class award seat on a popular flight, this creates a real risk:
the award may disappear while you are waiting for the purchased Avios to arrive.
The safer process is:
Find the award → calculate how many Avios you need → evaluate availability → buy only when appropriate.
Finnair Buy Avios should not be treated as a guaranteed instant top-up tool.
⏳ Do Finnair Avios Expire?
Finnair Plus uses an:
18-month activity rule.
As long as you collect or use Avios at least once every 18 months, your balance remains active.
Buying Avios counts as qualifying activity, so a purchase also extends the validity of your existing Finnair Avios.
There is one important exception:
simply transferring Avios between your own loyalty program accounts does not extend Finnair Avios validity.
Moving Avios between Finnair and BA therefore cannot be used by itself to keep the Finnair balance alive indefinitely.
💳 Which Credit Card Should You Use to Buy Finnair Avios?
Finnair Shop accepts major payment methods including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.
However, I would not automatically treat a Buy Avios transaction as an airline-ticket purchase for credit card bonus-category purposes.
My priority would generally be:
a card with a welcome-offer spending requirement
followed by:
a strong general-spend card.
Finnair Shop also states that transactions are ultimately made in EUR regardless of the display currency.
If your credit card charges a foreign transaction fee, that cost needs to be included when calculating your true cost per Avios.

🏁 Is Buying Finnair Avios Worth It?
At the regular price, I would not rush to buy a large amount of Finnair Avios.
The historical promotions tell a much more useful story.
A typical:
50% Bonus
has often resulted in a purchase cost around:
1.4–1.6¢ per Avios.
A:
40% Discount
has generally brought the cost closer to:
1.3–1.5¢.
The rare:
50% Discount
has been substantially better.
The November 2024 promotion reached roughly:
1.13¢ per Avios.
During the current November 2026 sale, my own account shows:
200K Avios for US$2,170
which produces a displayed cost of approximately:
1.085¢ per Avios.
So my basic rule is:
Typical Bonus → No need to rush
40% Off → Start evaluating
50% Off → Historical low-price territory
Finnair Avios also have an advantage that most airline miles do not.
After purchasing them, you can move them to:
British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus
and through British Airways to:
Qatar Airways.
That means a major Finnair discount can effectively become an opportunity to add Avios to the entire ecosystem at a relatively low acquisition cost.
If you already have a specific Business Class or partner award in mind, a 50% Off Finnair sale is the type of promotion worth taking seriously.
