American Express Platinum Card Japan: Hotel Status, Free Nights & Premium Dining Benefits

The American Express Platinum Card(プラチナ・カード) is one of the most premium personal travel cards issued by American Express in Japan.

Following its July 2026 refresh, the card has become much more compelling for travelers who can take advantage of its hotel, airline, dining, and premium travel benefits.

Simply renewing the card each year earns a Premium Free Stay Gift, while cardmembers who meet the annual spending requirement can earn up to two free hotel nights plus a ¥100,000 Airline Credit. The card also comes with elite status across six hotel loyalty programs and a valuable dining cashback benefit.

For travelers living in Japan who regularly stay at upscale hotels and dine at premium restaurants, this is where the Japanese Platinum Card really stands out.

Premium Free Stay Gift: Up to 2 Free Nights Per Year

One of the most straightforward annual benefits of the American Express Platinum Card is the Premium Free Stay Gift.

Simply renew the card and you receive:

1 Complimentary Night for Two

There is no spending requirement for the first night.

If you spend:

¥5,000,000

during the applicable program period and renew the card, you receive an additional:

1 Complimentary Night for Two

That means you can earn:

Up to 2 Premium Free Stay Gifts Per Year

Eligible spending on Family Cards also counts toward the ¥5,000,000 spending requirement.

Spend ¥5,000,000: Get a ¥100,000 Airline Credit

Another major addition from the 2026 refresh is the ¥100,000 Airline Credit.

Spend ¥5,000,000 during the applicable period and meet the renewal requirement, and you’ll receive:

¥100,000 Airline Credit

There is an important restriction, however.

This isn’t a generic ¥100,000 airline credit that can be used against any flight purchase.

The credit applies when purchasing an eligible international airline ticket through American Express Travel Online, with a qualifying transaction of at least ¥300,000 including tax.

Eligible Family Card spending also counts toward the ¥5,000,000 threshold.

RequirementBenefit

Spend ¥5,000,000 + renew¥100,000 Airline Credit

For cardmembers who can hit the threshold through normal spending, ¥5,000,000 is clearly the sweet spot for maximizing the card’s annual benefits.

Hotel Benefits: One of the Best Reasons to Hold the Japan Platinum Card

Hotel benefits are arguably the strongest part of the Japanese American Express Platinum Card.

Cardmembers receive elite status with six hotel loyalty programs without having to earn the status through hotel stays.

Hotel ProgramStatusKey Benefits
Hilton HonorsGoldBreakfast/F&B benefits, room upgrades, bonus points and more
Marriott BonvoyGold EliteRoom upgrades, 25% bonus points, late checkout and more
Seibu Prince Global RewardsPlatinumRoom upgrades, early check-in/late checkout and benefits across participating Prince Hotels
Radisson RewardsPremiumRoom upgrades, bonus points, member rates and other benefits
One HarmonyExclusiveBenefits at Okura Nikko Hotels, including room upgrades, early check-in/late checkout and bonus points
ALL AccorGoldRoom upgrades, early check-in/late checkout, welcome amenities and more

Hilton Honors Gold is probably the easiest of these statuses to extract meaningful value from, particularly if you regularly stay at Hilton properties.

For travelers who spend a lot of time traveling domestically in Japan, Seibu Prince Global Rewards Platinum and One Harmony Exclusive can also be surprisingly useful thanks to their footprints across Prince Hotels and Okura Nikko Hotels.

The card also provides access to Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) and other premium Amex hotel programs.

That makes the overall hotel proposition much broader than simply getting status with one hotel chain:

6 Hotel Elite Statuses + FHR + Premium Free Stay Gift

If you already stay at upscale hotels, this is where the Japan Platinum Card can deliver significantly more value than you’d get by looking at Membership Rewards alone.

Dining Benefits in Japan

The 2026 refresh also made dining a much more important part of the Platinum Card’s value proposition.

Global Dining Cashback: 50% Back

This is one of the most interesting additions to the refreshed Platinum Card.

After enrollment, eligible spending at participating restaurants in Japan and overseas earns:

50% Cashback

up to:

¥40,000 Per Year

American Express currently lists more than 2,000 participating restaurants, including select KIWAMI Dining® locations.

In practical terms, spending ¥80,000 at eligible restaurants can potentially max out the entire ¥40,000 annual cashback benefit.

For someone actually living in Japan and regularly dining at higher-end restaurants, that’s a very straightforward benefit to use and value.

KIWAMI Dining®: Access to Hard-to-Book Restaurants

KIWAMI Dining® isn’t really a restaurant discount. Its biggest selling point is access.

The program provides reservation opportunities at select premium restaurants in Japan, including restaurants that can otherwise be difficult to book.

There are two primary reservation opportunities:

Monthly Reservation Releases: Selected inventory for future months becomes available at the beginning of each month.

Last-Minute Reservations: Members who register for availability notifications may be notified when participating restaurants release last-minute tables.

Beginning in July 2026, eligible KIWAMI Dining purchases can also qualify for the 50% Global Dining Cashback after enrollment.

Note: The former 2 for 1 Dining by Shotaibiyori benefit ended on June 30, 2026, so it should no longer be considered a current Platinum Card benefit.

Membership Rewards|¥100 = 1 MR

Japanese American Express Membership Rewards cards generally earn:

¥100 = 1 Membership Rewards Point

Enrolling in Membership Rewards Plus (MR Plus) provides several key benefits:

  • MR points no longer expire
  • Improved transfer and redemption rates with selected airline, hotel, and other partners
  • Access to the Bonus Points Program, where eligible merchants can earn up to 3 MR per ¥100

MR Plus normally costs ¥3,300 per year (tax included), while selected premium American Express cards include it at no additional cost.

Transfers to ANA Mileage Club

ANA is one of the most valuable airline transfer options for Japanese American Express MR points.

Without MR Plus:

2,000 MR = 1,000 ANA miles

With MR Plus:

1,000 MR = 1,000 ANA miles

In addition to MR Plus, most cards require enrollment in the Membership Rewards ANA Course for ¥5,500 per year (tax included). The American Express Platinum Card and American Express Business Platinum Card include the ANA Course at no additional cost.

ANA transfers are limited to 40,000 miles per calendar year (January 1–December 31). If you hold multiple eligible Japanese American Express MR cards, the 40,000-mile annual limit applies across all eligible cards combined, rather than separately to each card.

Bottom Line

The American Express Platinum Card in Japan isn’t a card you get because it has the best everyday earning rate.

Its value comes from the overall package.

The four benefits I’d pay the most attention to are:

Up to 2 Premium Free Stay Gifts per year

¥5,000,000 annual spending threshold → ¥100,000 Airline Credit

Elite status with six hotel programs + FHR

50% Global Dining Cashback up to ¥40,000 per year + KIWAMI Dining

If you live in Japan, regularly stay at upscale hotels, enjoy higher-end dining, and can naturally put ¥5,000,000 of annual spending on the card, the overall value proposition becomes much more compelling.

On the other hand, if your primary goal is simply earning ANA miles as quickly as possible, the Japan Platinum Card isn’t necessarily the most efficient route. That’s one of the biggest differences we’ll see when comparing the Japan and U.S. American Express ecosystems.

👉 Apply for the American Express Platinum Card

Can Foreign Residents Apply?

Yes. Foreign nationals legally residing in Japan can apply for the Japanese American Express Platinum Card, subject to American Express Japan’s normal underwriting requirements.

If you already hold an American Express card issued in another country, it’s also worth looking into American Express Global Card Transfer.

That can be particularly useful for someone who has recently moved to Japan and hasn’t yet built a substantial Japanese credit history, since an existing relationship with American Express may help with the application process.

Final approval is always subject to American Express Japan’s individual underwriting decision.
