Avianca LifeMiles Complete Guide: Sweet Spots, Transfers & Award Rules

Avianca LifeMiles is the frequent flyer program of Avianca and a useful option for booking flights across the Star Alliance network.

Travelers can earn LifeMiles through transferable credit card points, airline activity, and mileage purchases, then redeem them for flights on partners such as EVA Air, ANA, Thai Airways, United Airlines, and Lufthansa.

Although LifeMiles has historically been known for long-haul business class sweet spots, recent pricing changes have made some older recommendations less attractive. This guide focuses on current award search results, credit card transfer partners, redemption opportunities, booking fees, cancellation rules, and LifeMiles+ benefits.

💳 How to Earn Avianca LifeMiles

Transfer U.S. Credit Card Points

LifeMiles partners with several major U.S. transferable points programs.

Transferable points programTransfer ratio
American Express Membership Rewards1:1
Citi ThankYou Points1:1*
Capital One Miles1:1
Bilt Rewards1:1
  • Citi transfer ratios depend on the eligible card and account.

Learn more about each program:

Cards such as Citi Strata Premier and Capital One Venture X can be useful for earning transferable points.

Because bank points can also be transferred to other airline programs, confirm award availability before moving points into LifeMiles.

Buy LifeMiles During Promotions

LifeMiles regularly runs promotions for purchasing miles.

Before buying, calculate the total cost of the miles required for your award, including redemption fees and taxes.

Compare that amount with available cash fares and other frequent flyer programs. Buying miles without a specific redemption in mind carries the risk of future award price changes.

🤝 Avianca LifeMiles Airline Partners

LifeMiles can be used to book flights operated by Star Alliance partners.

AirlineUseful redemption markets
EVA AirTaiwan to Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia
ANAJapan domestic and international routes
Thai AirwaysJapan and Southeast Asia
United AirlinesU.S. domestic and international routes
Air CanadaNorth American routes
Lufthansa, SWISS, AustrianEurope and transatlantic routes

Partner award availability depends on what appears in the LifeMiles booking system. A seat available through another Star Alliance program may not necessarily be bookable with LifeMiles.

⭐ Best Avianca LifeMiles Sweet Spots in Asia

The following prices come from actual LifeMiles searches conducted in October 2026.

All prices are for one-way nonstop flights.

Taipei–Jakarta (TPE–CGK)EVA Air20,00036,000
Tokyo–Bangkok (NRT–BKK)Thai Airways20,57041,470

These are observed award prices for specific travel dates, not guaranteed rates for every departure.

🥇 Taipei to Sapporo: 19,130 LifeMiles in Business Class

This is the strongest intra-Asia redemption found in our searches.

EVA Air business class from Taipei to Sapporo was available for 19,130 LifeMiles one-way, with a flight time of approximately 3 hours and 50 minutes.

The price matches the Taipei–Tokyo business class redemption, but Sapporo offers a longer flight for the same mileage requirement.

That makes it our top LifeMiles sweet spot among the routes tested.

Taipei to Tokyo: 19,130 LifeMiles in Business Class

EVA Air business class from Taipei to Tokyo Narita was also available for 19,130 LifeMiles.

This can be attractive when paid business class fares between Taiwan and Japan are high.

Taipei to Seoul: 18,030 LifeMiles in Business Class

EVA Air business class from Taipei to Seoul Incheon was available for 18,030 LifeMiles.

The flight takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, making it another option worth comparing with other Star Alliance programs.

Taipei to Okinawa: 14,780 LifeMiles in Business Class

Taipei to Okinawa had the lowest business class mileage requirement among the routes tested.

However, the flight is only about 90 minutes, so cash fares may offer better value.

Taipei to Jakarta: 36,000 LifeMiles in Business Class

EVA Air business class from Taipei to Jakarta was available for 36,000 LifeMiles.

The longer flight provides more time in business class, but the higher mileage requirement makes it less attractive than the Sapporo redemption.

Tokyo to Bangkok: 41,470 LifeMiles in Business Class

Thai Airways business class from Tokyo Narita to Bangkok was available for 41,470 LifeMiles.

While useful, this does not stand out as a particularly strong sweet spot compared with the EVA Air routes above.

🌏 Are Transpacific Business Class Awards Still Worth It?

LifeMiles was historically popular for business class awards between Asia and North America.

However, our recent searches found considerably higher redemption prices.

RouteAirlineEconomyBusiness
Los Angeles–Taipei (LAX–TPE)EVA Air41,14083,220
San Francisco–Tokyo (SFO–NRT)ANA55,000100,000

These prices are not particularly competitive compared with the best intra-Asia redemptions.

Partner business class award availability across the Pacific can also be difficult to find.

For now, we do not consider transpacific business class a primary LifeMiles sweet spot.

🇪🇺 Is LifeMiles Still Good for Business Class to Europe?

LifeMiles has historically been recommended for booking Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and other Star Alliance business class flights across the Atlantic.

However, older sweet spot prices should not be treated as current redemption rates.

Our latest research did not identify a sufficiently compelling European business class award to feature as a sweet spot.

For European itineraries, compare LifeMiles against Air Canada Aeroplan, particularly for connecting flights.

🔍 How to Search and Book LifeMiles Award Flights

StepWhat to do
1Sign in to your LifeMiles account
2Open the flight award search
3Enter your origin, destination, and travel dates
4Select economy or business class
5Confirm the operating airline and flight details
6Review mileage requirements, taxes, and ticket rules
7Complete the redemption and confirm ticket issuance

Always confirm that your desired award flight is available before transferring credit card points.

💰 Avianca LifeMiles Award Booking Fees

FeeTypical treatment
Partner award redemption feeUsually $25 per passenger per ticket
Government taxes and airport feesVary by itinerary
Carrier-imposed fuel surchargesGenerally not passed on

LifeMiles typically charges a separate redemption fee when booking Star Alliance partner awards.

This fee may appear at the final checkout stage, so the total cash amount can be higher than the taxes initially displayed in search results.

One advantage of LifeMiles is that it generally does not pass along substantial fuel surcharges imposed by certain partner airlines.

🔄 LifeMiles Award Changes and Cancellations

LifeMiles award tickets are not generally free to cancel.

ItemPolicy
Award changesFees depend on ticket rules; partner award cases may cost up to $150
Cancellation and mileage redepositFees depend on the ticket; partner award cases may cost up to $200
Completely unused ticketsEligible for redeposit subject to applicable rules
Partially used ticketsNot covered by standard full-refund treatment
Redeemed milesReturned to the original LifeMiles account when eligible
Expired milesNot generally eligible for ordinary redeposit

Exact fees and conditions depend on the award ticket and applicable terms.

Because cancellation fees can be substantial, LifeMiles is better suited to trips with relatively firm travel plans.

⏳ Avianca LifeMiles Expiration Policy

Standard LifeMiles accounts generally follow a 12-month mileage expiration period.

Qualifying mileage-earning activity can reset the expiration period.

Account activityResets expiration?
Earning eligible flight milesYes
Transferring eligible credit card points into LifeMilesYes
Qualifying purchased milesYes
Redeeming miles for an award ticketNo
Logging in or searching for flightsNo

Redeeming miles alone does not extend the expiration date of your remaining balance.

A practical strategy is to keep flexible points in your bank rewards account until you are ready to book, rather than transferring them into LifeMiles well in advance.

🏅 Avianca LifeMiles Elite Status

LifeMiles has four main elite tiers: Red Plus, Silver, Gold, and Diamond. Members qualify by earning Qualifying Miles and meeting the required Avianca-specific earning requirement.

Membership TierStar Alliance StatusKey Benefits
Red PlusStar Alliance SilverAvianca member benefits
SilverStar Alliance SilverPriority services, extra baggage, Avianca lounge benefits
GoldStar Alliance GoldStar Alliance lounge access, priority check-in, priority boarding, extra baggage
DiamondStar Alliance GoldGold benefits, exclusive Avianca Diamond lounges, enhanced services

LifeMiles and Qualifying Miles serve different purposes. LifeMiles are used for award travel, while Qualifying Miles determine your elite status.

Gold and Diamond both include Star Alliance Gold, making them particularly valuable for frequent Star Alliance travelers.

However, you do not need elite status to redeem LifeMiles for EVA Air, ANA, United, or other Partner Airlines.

👥 Can You Book LifeMiles Awards for Family or Friends?

Yes. You can use your LifeMiles balance to book eligible award tickets for another traveler.

This is different from transferring miles between two LifeMiles accounts.

ActionHow it works
Book a ticket for someone elseRedeem from your own account using the passenger’s details
Transfer miles to another accountSeparate mileage transfer transaction

Make sure the passenger’s name and travel document information are entered correctly.

Name corrections on partner awards may be restricted, so do not assume passenger information can be changed freely after ticketing.

💎 Is LifeMiles+ Worth It?

LifeMiles+ is a paid subscription offering mileage-related benefits and discounts on eligible award flights.

Our searches found the following economy class prices:

RouteStandard LifeMilesLifeMiles+
Taipei–Tokyo12,75011,470
Taipei–Seoul9,7808,800
Taipei–Okinawa8,2307,400

These results reflect economy class searches. The same discount should not automatically be assumed for business class awards.

Important 2026 Change: Free Award Cancellations

LifeMiles+ previously offered complimentary award changes and cancellations to eligible Basic-tier and higher subscribers.

However, new subscriptions beginning June 26, 2026, no longer include this benefit.

Existing eligible subscribers who joined before the change may retain their original benefit until they reach 12 months from their initial subscription date, subject to the applicable transition terms.

As a result, new subscribers should evaluate LifeMiles+ based on mileage discounts and other benefits rather than expecting complimentary award cancellations.

🏁 Is Avianca LifeMiles Worth Using?

LifeMiles remains a useful Star Alliance award program, but many historical long-haul business class sweet spots are no longer as compelling.

Based on our October 2026 searches, the strongest opportunities were found on EVA Air’s intra-Asia business class routes.

RedemptionOur assessment
Taipei–Sapporo business classTop recommendation
Taipei–Tokyo business classWorth comparing
Taipei–Seoul business classWorth comparing
Taipei–Okinawa business classLow mileage, short flight
Taipei–Jakarta business classCompare alternatives
Tokyo–Bangkok business classLimited pricing advantage
Transpacific business classHigh observed mileage prices
Europe business classNo compelling verified sweet spot in our latest searches

The best LifeMiles strategy is to find an attractive partner award first, then decide how to acquire the miles needed to book it.

Because award cancellation costs can be high, LifeMiles is generally best used when your travel plans are reasonably firm.
