IHG Tokyo & Yokohama Free Night Guide|50K vs 60K FNA

IHG One Rewards anniversary Free Night Awards (FNAs) are among the most valuable ongoing benefits of Chase IHG credit cards.

Beginning in 2027, the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card offers a 50K Free Night Award, while the Premier Select provides a 60K Free Night Award. Both certificates support Points Top-Off, allowing cardholders to redeem hotels that require more points than the certificate’s face value.

For this guide, I searched seven upscale IHG hotels in Tokyo and Yokohama, identifying their lowest award-night rates over approximately the next year and comparing the value of redeeming 50K and 60K FNAs.

Because IHG uses dynamic award pricing, cash rates and required points tend to move closely together. The goal is not simply to find the most expensive hotel, but to identify the redemptions that deliver the greatest savings after accounting for certificate acquisition costs and additional points.

⭐ Seven IHG Hotels in Tokyo & Yokohama: Award Night Comparison

Using October 23, 2026 as the search date, I examined award-night pricing over approximately the following year and selected the lowest points requirement found for each of the seven hotels.

I then used the cash rate corresponding to each selected date to calculate the value of redeeming a 50K or 60K FNA.

Because each hotel’s lowest award rate falls on a different date, the dates are not necessarily the same across all properties.

Rates are based on the October 23, 2026 search, covering approximately the following year. The estimated acquisition costs are $50 for a 50K FNA and $150 for a 60K FNA. Additional points are valued at $0.005 each.

The comparison includes five InterContinental properties and two upscale design-focused hotels: Kimpton Shinjuku Tokyo and Hotel Indigo Tokyo Shibuya.

These hotels represent different redemption opportunities, from luxury city stays to waterfront properties in Yokohama.

💳 How Much Does a 50K or 60K FNA Really Cost?

Before calculating the value of a Free Night Award, I first estimate the annual cost of obtaining the certificate.

For this comparison, I subtract the annual Airline Statement Credit from the credit card’s annual holding cost.

Item50K FNA60K FNA
Credit CardPremierPremier Select
Annual Card Cost$150$350
Airline Statement Credit−$100−$200
Effective FNA Acquisition Cost$50$150
Cost to Buy Equivalent Points$250$300

This model assumes the cardholder can fully use the Airline Statement Credit each year and allocates the remaining annual card cost to the certificate.

To keep the comparison consistent, I exclude IHG dining credits, United Airlines TravelBank credits ($25 every six months, or $50 annually), and all other credit card benefits.

At an IHG Buy Points promotional price of $0.005 per point, purchasing 50,000 points would have an equivalent cost of $250, while 60,000 points would cost $300.

Both certificates therefore have effective acquisition costs well below the corresponding point purchase values.

🎯 The Best Strategy for Redeeming IHG FNAs

IHG cash rates and award-night point requirements are closely connected.

When a hotel’s cash price increases, the points required for a Reward Night often increase as well. That makes it difficult to consistently find extremely expensive hotel stays with unusually low award prices.

For 50K and 60K FNAs, my preferred strategy is to find high-cash-rate nights that require points close to the certificate’s limit without needing additional points.

  • 50K FNA: Target expensive hotel nights requiring close to, but no more than, 50,000 points.
  • 60K FNA: Target expensive hotel nights requiring close to, but no more than, 60,000 points.

This allows you to make good use of the certificate without spending additional points.

However, topping off a certificate can still be worthwhile.

If the additional cash value of a more expensive hotel exceeds the cost of the extra points, a topped-off redemption may deliver greater overall savings.

Throughout this guide, I use the following formula:

Net Savings = Cash Rate − Effective FNA Acquisition Cost − Top-Off Point Cost

Additional points are valued at $0.005 each, based on IHG’s 100% Buy Points bonus pricing.

🏆 Best 50K FNA Redemptions: Seven-Hotel Ranking

The effective acquisition cost of a 50K FNA is $50. When a hotel requires more than 50,000 points, the difference is covered through Points Top-Off.

2Hotel Indigo Tokyo Shibuya7K$35$303

4ANA InterContinental Tokyo4K$20$258
5The Strings Tokyo14K$70$256
6Yokohama Pier 80$0$188
7Yokohama Grand0$0$77

Kimpton Shinjuku Tokyo: Highest Net Savings at $323

On December 14, 2026, Kimpton Shinjuku Tokyo requires 64,000 points, compared with a cash rate of $443.

Using a 50K FNA requires an additional 14,000 points, valued at $70.

$443 − $50 − $70 = $323 in net savings.

Although this redemption requires extra points, the higher cash rate makes Kimpton the top-ranked 50K FNA redemption in this comparison.

Hotel Indigo Tokyo Shibuya: Strong Value With Fewer Extra Points

On the same date, Hotel Indigo Tokyo Shibuya requires 57,000 points, with a cash rate of $388.

A 50K FNA needs only 7,000 additional points, valued at $35.

$388 − $50 − $35 = $303 in net savings.

Compared with Kimpton, Hotel Indigo requires half as many additional points while delivering nearly the same net savings.

Two Tokyo InterContinental Hotels: Minimal Points Top-Off

On January 4, 2027, InterContinental Tokyo Bay requires 52,000 points, while ANA InterContinental Tokyo requires 54,000 points.

A 50K FNA therefore needs just 2,000 or 4,000 additional points.

Net savings are $261 for Tokyo Bay and $258 for ANA Tokyo.

Both are attractive choices for travelers who want to stay close to the certificate’s face value without a substantial points top-off.

🏅 Best 60K FNA Redemptions: Seven-Hotel Ranking

The effective acquisition cost of a 60K FNA is $150. Points Top-Off is needed only when the award price exceeds 60,000 points.

RankHotelExtra PointsTop-Off CostNet Savings
1Kimpton Shinjuku Tokyo4K$20$273
2Hotel Indigo Tokyo Shibuya0$0$238

5InterContinental Tokyo Bay0$0$171
6Yokohama Pier 80$0$88
7Yokohama Grand0$0−$23

Kimpton Shinjuku Tokyo: Highest Net Savings at $273

Kimpton Shinjuku Tokyo requires 64,000 points, so using a 60K FNA requires only 4,000 additional points.

At $0.005 per point, the top-off cost is $20.

$443 − $150 − $20 = $273 in net savings.

Despite the higher effective acquisition cost of the 60K FNA, Kimpton remains the highest-value redemption among the seven hotels.

Hotel Indigo Tokyo Shibuya: Best Redemption Without Topping Off

Hotel Indigo Tokyo Shibuya requires 57,000 points, making it eligible for a 60K FNA without additional points.

The corresponding cash rate is $388.

$388 − $150 = $238 in net savings.

This is the highest net savings among the seven hotels that require no extra points with a 60K FNA.

If your goal is to avoid Points Top-Off entirely, Hotel Indigo Tokyo Shibuya is the strongest option in this comparison.

The Strings by InterContinental Tokyo: A Small Top-Off

On January 31, 2027, The Strings by InterContinental Tokyo requires 64,000 points, with a cash rate of $376.

Using a 60K FNA requires 4,000 additional points, valued at $20.

$376 − $150 − $20 = $206 in net savings.

It ranks third, offering a relatively small top-off requirement for an upscale Tokyo hotel.

🌊 Are the Two Yokohama InterContinental Hotels Worth Redeeming?

InterContinental Yokohama Pier 8

On January 13, 2027, InterContinental Yokohama Pier 8 requires 38,000 points, compared with a cash rate of $238.

Neither the 50K nor the 60K FNA requires additional points.

  • 50K FNA net savings: $188
  • 60K FNA net savings: $88

Pier 8 is an upscale boutique-style InterContinental property in Yokohama’s waterfront district.

However, the 38,000-point award rate is well below either certificate’s limit, so it does not fully utilize the certificate’s point allowance.

InterContinental Yokohama Grand

On January 5, 2027, InterContinental Yokohama Grand requires only 21,000 points, with a cash rate of $127.

Neither certificate requires additional points, but the relatively low cash rate reduces the economic benefit.

  • 50K FNA net savings: $77
  • 60K FNA net savings: −$23

Under this guide’s cost assumptions, using a 60K FNA for this particular night would be less economical than simply paying cash.

Unless your certificate is approaching expiration, I would not prioritize a high-value FNA for such a low-priced stay.

📊 Is a 50K or 60K FNA More Valuable?

Comparison50K FNA60K FNA
Effective Acquisition Cost$50$150
Highest-Value HotelKimpton ShinjukuKimpton Shinjuku
Highest Net Savings$323$273
Best No-Top-Off HotelYokohama Pier 8Hotel Indigo Shibuya

A 60K FNA provides 10,000 more points of redemption capacity than a 50K FNA, but its effective acquisition cost is $100 higher under this model.

At $0.005 per point, the additional 10,000 points are worth just $50.

Therefore, a 50K FNA can deliver greater net savings than a 60K FNA for the same hotel and date, even though the 60K certificate has a higher face value.

This does not mean the Premier Select’s other benefits lack value. It simply reflects a comparison focused exclusively on the economics of the anniversary Free Night Awards.

🔄 How Are Points Top-Off Costs Calculated?

All additional points in this guide are valued at $0.005 each, based on IHG’s 100% Buy Points bonus pricing.

For example, topping off a certificate with 4,000 points has an equivalent cost of $20.

However, this is the valuation of points already held or purchased at that effective price. It does not mean you can always purchase exactly 4,000 points for $20.

IHG point purchase promotions have different minimum purchase thresholds. During the October 2026 promotion, purchasing at least 40,000 base points in one transaction was required to receive a 100% bonus.

If you need to buy points specifically for a redemption, consider the actual cash outlay and any unused points remaining in your account.

For more details, see the IHG Buy Points Guide.

🏁 Final Thoughts

Among the seven Tokyo and Yokohama IHG hotels examined, Kimpton Shinjuku Tokyo ranks first for net savings with both the 50K and 60K FNAs.

Using a 50K FNA with 14,000 extra points delivers estimated net savings of $323. Using a 60K FNA with 4,000 extra points results in $273 in estimated net savings.

For travelers who prefer not to use additional points, Hotel Indigo Tokyo Shibuya is the standout 60K FNA redemption. Its 57,000-point award rate allows a $388 stay to be redeemed without a top-off, resulting in $238 in estimated net savings.

Because IHG cash rates and award prices tend to move together, my preferred strategy is simple:

Look for high-cash-rate nights priced close to the 50K or 60K certificate limit, ideally without a top-off. But don’t avoid adding points when doing so produces greater net savings.

All prices in this guide reflect the October 23, 2026 search results and may change over time.
