IHG Premier vs Premier Business|Which IHG Credit Card Should You Get?

The IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card and IHG One Rewards Premier Business Credit Card are two of Chase’s core IHG co-branded credit cards.

Their main IHG benefits are remarkably similar. Both offer IHG One Rewards Platinum Elite Status, an annual 40K Anniversary Free Night, and the 4th Reward Night Free on eligible award stays.

So this comparison isn’t about repeating every benefit. Instead, it focuses on three questions:

What are the real differences between Premier and Premier Business? Which card should you apply for first? And does it make sense to hold both?

The Core IHG Benefits Are Almost Identical

From a hotel-benefits perspective, there isn’t a huge difference between the two cards.

Both provide:

  • IHG One Rewards Platinum Elite Status
  • One 40K Anniversary Free Night each year
  • The ability to add IHG Points to a Free Night through Top-Off
  • 4th Reward Night Free on eligible award stays
  • 10X IHG Points from card spending at IHG hotels
  • A path to Diamond Elite through qualifying annual spending

There’s no reason to repeat every benefit here. For the complete details, see the individual AME Database guides:

The more important differences are spending categories, Chase 5/24, and long-term card strategy.

Premier Business Adds 5X Business Categories

Both cards earn 5X IHG Points on travel, dining, and gas stations.

Premier Business adds two useful business categories:

Social Media / Search Engine Advertising → 5X

Office Supply Stores → 5X

For business owners who regularly spend on advertising or office supplies, Premier Business can therefore be the stronger card for ongoing business expenses.

There’s also another benefit available only on the Business version.

Spend US$60K and Earn an Additional Free Night

Both cards provide an annual 40K Anniversary Free Night.

Premier Business adds another opportunity:

Spend US$60,000 in a calendar year and earn an additional Free Night.

That means a high-spending Premier Business cardholder could receive:

1 Anniversary Free Night + 1 Spending Free Night

However, I wouldn’t recommend spending US$60,000 solely to earn this additional certificate.

If your business naturally generates that level of card spending, it’s a useful extra benefit. Otherwise, the more strategically important difference is Chase 5/24.

Chase 5/24: Why Premier Business Can Be More Strategic

Both cards are subject to Chase 5/24 when you apply.

The important difference comes after approval.

The IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card is a personal card, so opening it will generally add another account to your 5/24 count.

The IHG One Rewards Premier Business Credit Card is a business card and generally does not appear on your personal credit report after approval. As a result, it typically does not increase your 5/24 count.

For someone who qualifies for a business card and is still carefully managing Chase 5/24, I generally prefer:

Premier Business → Premier

rather than:

Premier → Premier Business

Applying for Premier Business first lets you gain access to the core IHG benefits while preserving more flexibility under 5/24 before applying for the personal Premier later.

Can You Hold Premier and Premier Business Together?

Yes—and this is where the strategy becomes much more interesting.

Premier and Premier Business are separate personal and business products, and each card provides its own Anniversary Free Night.

Holding both means:

IHG Premier

1 × 40K Anniversary Free Night per year

IHG Premier Business

1 × 40K Anniversary Free Night per year

Together:

2 × 40K Anniversary Free Nights Every Year

Both certificates can also be topped off with IHG Points when redeeming for hotels costing more than 40K points.

This is the biggest reason I see value in holding both cards long term.

Platinum Elite Status doesn’t become “double Platinum” by holding two cards, and the 4th Reward Night Free doesn’t stack twice.

What actually doubles is much more useful:

Your annual 40K Anniversary Free Nights.

AME Strategy: It’s Not Really an Either-Or Decision

If you don’t qualify for a business credit card, the choice is straightforward:

IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card.

But if you do qualify for Premier Business, I think the better question isn’t:

Premier or Premier Business?

It’s:

Which one should you get first?

My preferred order is:

① IHG One Rewards Premier Business Credit Card

② IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card

③ Keep Both Long Term

This approach takes advantage of the fact that Chase business cards generally don’t add to your 5/24 count while eventually building toward:

2 IHG Premier Cards → 2 × 40K Anniversary Free Nights Every Year

If you can consistently get good value from both certificates, that’s far more important than deciding which card has one extra 5X spending category.

Bottom Line

IHG Premier and Premier Business aren’t necessarily an either-or decision.

If you can only get one and qualify for a business card, I generally prefer IHG One Rewards Premier Business Credit Card when preserving 5/24 slots matters. If you don’t qualify for a business card, IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card is the straightforward choice.

For frequent IHG travelers, however, the more complete long-term strategy is:

Premier Business → Premier → Keep Both

The main objective is simple:

Earn two 40K Anniversary Free Nights every year.
