Marriott Bonvoy has very different credit card ecosystems in Japan and the United States.
In Japan, American Express Japan issues two Marriott Bonvoy cards. In the U.S., Marriott cards are issued by both American Express and Chase, giving cardholders a much wider range of options.
Japan, however, has one major advantage: the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Premium Card(Marriott Bonvoy アメリカン・エキスプレス・プレミアム・カード) earns an impressive 3 Marriott Bonvoy points per ¥100 on everyday purchases.
The U.S. has the edge when it comes to elite status, Elite Night Credits, Free Night Awards, and multi-card strategies.
For travelers who can access credit cards in both countries, combining the two ecosystems can be even more powerful.
Japan vs. U.S. Marriott Credit Card Comparison
Here’s a quick look at the major Marriott cards in both markets.
| Country | Issuer | Card | Annual Fee | General Spend | Marriott Spend | Elite Status | Elite Night Credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 🇯🇵 | American Express Japan | Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card | ¥34,100 | 2 / ¥100 | 5 / ¥100 | Gold | 5 |
| 🇯🇵 | American Express Japan | Marriott Bonvoy American Express Premium Card | ¥82,500 | 3 / ¥100 | 6 / ¥100 | Gold; ¥5M → Platinum | 15 |
| 🇺🇸 | Chase | Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card | US$0 | 1X | 3X | Silver | 5 |
| 🇺🇸 | Chase | Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card | US$95 | 2X | 6X | Silver | 15 |
| 🇺🇸 | Chase | Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful | US$250 | 2X | 6X | Gold | 15 |
| 🇺🇸 | Chase | The Ritz-Carlton™ Credit Card | US$450 | 2X | 6X | Gold | 15 |
| 🇺🇸 | American Express | Marriott Bonvoy Bevy® American Express® Card | US$250 | 2X | 6X | Gold | 15 |
| 🇺🇸 | American Express | Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant | US$650 | 2X | 6X | Platinum | 25 |
| 🇺🇸 | American Express | Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card | US$125 | 2X | 6X | Gold | 15 |
*The Ritz-Carlton Credit Card is no longer available to new applicants. It remains relevant to the U.S. Marriott ecosystem because existing eligible cardholders can continue to hold it, and eligible Chase Marriott cardholders may have access to a product-change path.
The biggest difference is obvious: the U.S. simply has a much larger Marriott credit card ecosystem.
But more cards don’t necessarily mean better earning rates.
Everyday Spending: Japan Has the Edge
This is where the Japanese Marriott cards become particularly interesting.
The Marriott Bonvoy American Express Premium Card earns:
¥100 → 3 Marriott Points
The standard Japanese Marriott card earns:
¥100 → 2 Marriott Points
Most mid- and premium-tier U.S. Marriott cards, including the Brilliant, Boundless, and Business cards, earn:
US$1 → 2 Marriott Points
Since the cards earn in different currencies, comparing 3X with 2X directly doesn’t make sense.
For illustration, assume:
US$1 ≈ ¥150
That produces the following approximate comparison:
| US$1 Equivalent in General Spending | Marriott Points |
|---|---|
| 🇯🇵 Marriott Premium | ~4.5 |
| 🇯🇵 Marriott Card | ~3 |
| 🇺🇸 Most Marriott Cards | 2 |
🏆 Winner: Japan
For large amounts of non-bonused everyday spending, the Japanese Marriott Premium Card has an excellent earning structure.
Exchange rates fluctuate, of course, so this shouldn’t be interpreted as a fixed 4.5X return. The important point is that 3 Marriott Points per ¥100 makes the Japanese Premium Card unusually strong for general spending.
Turning Marriott Points Into Airline Miles
Marriott Bonvoy is particularly interesting for miles enthusiasts because Marriott Points aren’t limited to hotel stays.
Points can be transferred to dozens of airline loyalty programs, with many partners using a base ratio of:
3 Marriott Points → 1 Airline Mile
For eligible airline partners, transferring in larger increments can improve the effective conversion rate. A commonly useful example is:
60,000 Marriott Points → 25,000 Airline Miles
Using that effective ratio, general spending on the Japanese Marriott Premium Card works out to approximately:
¥100 → 3 Marriott Points → 1.25 Airline Miles
Or roughly:
¥80 of spending per airline mile
That makes the Japanese Marriott Premium much more than a hotel card.
It effectively provides access to a broad selection of airline programs while allowing you to keep your rewards as Marriott Points until you decide where to transfer them.
🏆 Airline-mile flexibility: Japan Premium is particularly compelling
This flexibility is especially useful in Japan, where the transferable-points credit card ecosystem is much smaller than what is available in the United States.
The U.S. Advantage: More Cards and More Bonus Categories
The U.S. Marriott ecosystem is split between two issuers.
American Express
- Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant
- Marriott Bonvoy Bevy
- Marriott Bonvoy Business
Chase
- Marriott Bonvoy Bold
- Marriott Bonvoy Boundless
- Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful
- The Ritz-Carlton Credit Card
Some U.S. Marriott cards also offer bonus categories beyond Marriott hotels.
For example, the Brilliant earns:
- 6X at participating Marriott hotels
- 3X at restaurants
- 3X on flights booked directly with airlines
- 2X on other purchases
That creates more opportunities to optimize spending.
But there’s another important distinction.
If your real objective is airline miles rather than Marriott Points, U.S. cardholders don’t necessarily need to use Marriott cards for everyday spending.
The U.S. has much broader transferable-points ecosystems, including American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, and Capital One Miles.
So the two markets have fundamentally different strategies:
🇯🇵 Japan: Marriott Premium can work as both a hotel-points and airline-miles card.
🇺🇸 U.S.: Marriott cards can focus on Marriott benefits while other cards handle airline-mile earning.
Elite Night Credits: Where the U.S. Pulls Ahead
The comparison changes dramatically when the goal becomes Marriott Platinum or Titanium Elite rather than simply earning points.
🇯🇵 American Express Japan Marriott Premium
The Japanese Premium Card provides:
15 Elite Night Credits per year
Cardmembers can also earn Platinum Elite after ¥5,000,000 in qualifying annual spending.
That’s useful for someone who wants Platinum without completing 50 actual nights.
For travelers pursuing Titanium, however, Elite Night Credits become much more important.
🇺🇸 American Express Marriott Brilliant
The Brilliant provides:
25 Elite Night Credits per year
It also comes with:
Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite
That immediately makes it one of the strongest Marriott cards for elite-status-focused travelers.
🇺🇸 American Express Marriott Business
The Marriott Bonvoy Business provides another:
15 Elite Night Credits
And this is where the U.S. Marriott strategy gets much more interesting.
Brilliant 25 + Business 15 = 40 Elite Night Credits
A U.S. cardholder with both cards can therefore begin the year with 40 Elite Night Credits before completing any actual hotel stays.
Important: U.S. Consumer Card Elite Nights Don’t Keep Stacking
Holding multiple U.S. Marriott consumer cards doesn’t mean you can add all of their Elite Night Credits together.
For example:
Brilliant: 25 nights
plus
Ritz-Carlton: 15 nights
does not mean:
40 nights
When multiple eligible U.S. consumer Marriott cards are held, the consumer Elite Night Credits generally don’t stack with each other.
The important combination is:
Consumer Card + Business Card
which is why:
Brilliant 25 + Business 15 = 40 nights
is much more important for elite-status strategy than simply collecting several U.S. personal Marriott cards.
The Cross-Border Strategy: Start With 55 Elite Night Credits
This is where combining the Japanese and U.S. Marriott ecosystems becomes especially interesting.
Consider holding all three:
🇺🇸 American Express
Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant
25 Elite Night Credits
🇺🇸 American Express
Marriott Bonvoy Business
15 Elite Night Credits
🇯🇵 American Express Japan
Marriott Bonvoy American Express Premium Card
15 Elite Night Credits
Combined:
25 + 15 + 15 = 55 Elite Night Credits
For an eligible cardholder whose Marriott account receives all three sets of credits, that means potentially beginning the year with:
55 Elite Night Credits
Marriott Platinum Elite requires 50 nights.
Titanium Elite requires 75 nights.
That leaves only:
20 additional nights to reach Titanium Elite
This is one of the most interesting advantages of combining Marriott cards across Japan and the United States.
Instead of looking at the Japanese and U.S. cards independently, the cross-border strategy allows each market to serve a different purpose:
U.S. Brilliant → 25 nights + Platinum
U.S. Business → another 15 nights
Japan Premium → another 15 nights
Total → 55 nights
For anyone pursuing Marriott Titanium Elite, this can be considerably more valuable than optimizing a small difference in everyday earning rates.

Where Does the Ritz-Carlton Card Fit?
The Chase-issued The Ritz-Carlton Credit Card deserves a place in this comparison even though it isn’t open to new applicants.
Its role is different from the Brilliant.
The card offers Marriott Gold Elite, 15 Elite Night Credits and a high-value annual Free Night Award, along with premium Ritz-Carlton and travel benefits.
But for pure Elite Night Credit strategy:
Brilliant: 25 nights
Ritz-Carlton: 15 nights
And because both are consumer cards, holding both doesn’t turn those numbers into 40 Elite Night Credits.
So if Titanium is the goal:
Brilliant + Business is the more important combination.
The Ritz-Carlton Card is better evaluated for its Free Night Award and premium travel benefits, rather than as another way to stack Elite Night Credits.
Free Night Awards: The U.S. Is More Straightforward
Japan and the U.S. take very different approaches to Marriott Free Night Awards.
| Country | Issuer | Card | Free Night Award | Main Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 🇯🇵 | Amex Japan | Marriott Card | Up to 50K | ¥2.5M spend + renewal |
| 🇯🇵 | Amex Japan | Marriott Premium | Up to 75K | ¥4M spend + renewal |
| 🇺🇸 | Chase | Boundless | 35K | Card anniversary |
| 🇺🇸 | Chase | Ritz-Carlton | 85K | Card anniversary |
| 🇺🇸 | Amex | Brilliant | 85K | Card anniversary |
| 🇺🇸 | Amex | Business | 35K | Card anniversary |
Japan’s Premium Card offers a valuable 75K Free Night Award, but the ¥4,000,000 spending requirement is substantial.
The Brilliant and Ritz-Carlton Card, meanwhile, offer their annual high-value certificates based primarily on keeping the card through the anniversary rather than meeting a comparable multimillion-yen spending requirement.
🏆 Winner: United States
For Free Night Awards, the U.S. structure is generally easier to maximize.
Japan Premium vs. U.S. Brilliant vs. Ritz-Carlton
The three premium Marriott cards highlight the differences between the two markets particularly well.
| 🇯🇵 Amex Japan Marriott Premium | 🇺🇸 Amex Brilliant | 🇺🇸 Chase Ritz-Carlton | |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Spend | 3 / ¥100 | 2X | 2X |
| Marriott Spend | 6 / ¥100 | 6X | 6X |
| Included Status | Gold | Platinum | Gold |
| Elite Night Credits | 15 | 25 | 15 |
| Free Night Award | 75K | 85K | 85K |
| Free Night Spend Requirement | ¥4M + renewal | Anniversary | Anniversary |
| Platinum Path | ¥5M spend | Included | — |
| Best For | Points earning | Elite status | Premium travel benefits |
The cards aren’t really competing for exactly the same job.
Japan Marriott Premium → points earning
U.S. Brilliant → Marriott elite status
U.S. Ritz-Carlton → premium travel benefits + Free Night Award
That makes them potentially complementary for someone who has access to both markets.
Global Miles Lab Results: Japan vs. U.S. Marriott Cards
| Category | 🇯🇵 Japan | 🇺🇸 United States |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday Marriott Points | 🏆 Winner | — |
| Marriott → Airline Miles | 🏆 Premium is excellent | Strong alternatives outside Marriott |
| Bonus Categories | — | 🏆 Winner |
| Marriott Card Selection | 2 cards | 🏆 Amex + Chase |
| Elite Status | — | 🏆 Winner |
| Elite Night Credits | — | 🏆 Winner |
| Free Night Awards | — | 🏆 Winner |
| Multi-Card Strategies | Limited | 🏆 Much stronger |
| Cross-Border Strategy | Adds 15 nights | 40-night U.S. base |
Bottom Line
There isn’t a single winner in the Japan vs. U.S. Marriott credit card comparison.
For everyday Marriott Points earning, the American Express Japan Marriott Bonvoy Premium Card is surprisingly strong. Earning 3 Marriott Points per ¥100 also makes it useful for travelers who eventually want to convert Marriott Points into airline miles.
The United States has the stronger overall Marriott credit card ecosystem. American Express and Chase provide a much wider selection of cards, while the Brilliant stands out with Platinum Elite and 25 Elite Night Credits. Adding the U.S. Marriott Bonvoy Business increases that to 40 Elite Night Credits.
But the most interesting strategy is available to someone who can use both markets:
🇺🇸 Amex Brilliant: 25 nights
+ 🇺🇸 Amex Marriott Business: 15 nights
+ 🇯🇵 Amex Japan Marriott Premium: 15 nights
= 55 Elite Night Credits
That means starting with 55 nights and needing only 20 more to reach Marriott Titanium Elite.
So the result of this Global Miles Lab comparison is straightforward:
Best for everyday Marriott Points → 🇯🇵 Japan
Best for elite status, Free Night Awards and card selection → 🇺🇸 United States
Best Titanium strategy → 🇯🇵 Japan + 🇺🇸 United States
For travelers with access to both credit card markets, combining the two ecosystems is more powerful than choosing one over the other.
