The Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card (Marriott Bonvoy® アメリカン・エキスプレス®・カード) is the standard version of Japan’s Marriott Bonvoy Amex lineup.
It comes with Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status, 5 Elite Night Credits each year, and the opportunity to earn an annual Free Night Award after meeting the spending requirement and renewing the card.
But there’s another reason this card stands out in Japan: Marriott Bonvoy points are unusually flexible by Japanese credit card standards.
Unlike the U.S., Japan doesn’t have a large selection of bank-issued transferable points programs like Amex Membership Rewards or Chase Ultimate Rewards. Marriott points can be used for hotel stays or transferred to a wide range of airline loyalty programs, giving travelers much more flexibility than a typical airline-specific card.

Annual Free Night Award
Spend ¥2,500,000 in a year and renew the card to receive a Free Night Award worth up to 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy points.
You can also top up the certificate with up to 25,000 of your own Marriott points, allowing you to book a property costing as much as 75,000 points per night.
The spending requirement is considerably lower than the Premium Card’s, making the standard card easier to maximize for travelers who don’t put ¥4–5 million of annual spending on a single card.
A Flexible Way to Earn Airline Miles in Japan
The card earns 2 Marriott Bonvoy points per ¥100 on general purchases.
With many Marriott airline partners, transferring 60,000 points earns 25,000 miles after the 5,000-mile transfer bonus.
That gives you an effective return of approximately:
¥100 = 0.83 airline miles
If your only goal is earning ANA or JAL miles as quickly as possible, certain airline credit cards can offer a better earning rate.
The advantage here is flexibility.
Instead of committing your spending to a single airline currency from day one, you can accumulate Marriott points and decide where to transfer them when you actually need the miles.
That flexibility is much more valuable in Japan than it might initially appear, since the Japanese credit card market has relatively few transferable points currencies comparable to those available in the U.S.
Marriott Bonvoy American Express vs. Premium
| Benefit | Marriott Bonvoy Amex | Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Annual Fee | ¥34,100 | ¥82,500 |
| Gold Elite | Yes | Yes |
| Platinum Elite | — | Spend ¥5,000,000 |
| Elite Night Credits | 5 nights | 15 nights |
| Free Night Award | Up to 50,000 points | Up to 75,000 points |
| Free Night Spending Requirement | ¥2,500,000 | ¥4,000,000 |
| General Spending | 2 points / ¥100 | 3 points / ¥100 |
| Marriott Spending | 5 points / ¥100 | 6 points / ¥100 |
The standard Marriott Bonvoy Amex makes more sense if you primarily want Gold Elite status, a Free Night Award, and access to the Marriott Bonvoy points ecosystem without committing a very large amount of annual spending to the card.
If you can consistently spend ¥4–5 million per year and value 15 Elite Night Credits, a larger Free Night Award, and the opportunity to earn Platinum Elite, the Premium Card is the stronger option.
Bottom Line
The Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card is a solid option for Japan-based travelers who want Marriott benefits without the much higher spending requirements of the Premium Card.
Gold Elite status, 5 Elite Night Credits, and the annual Free Night Award provide the hotel value, while Marriott Bonvoy points add something that’s harder to find in Japan: the ability to earn points now and choose an airline transfer partner later.
If you won’t spend enough to maximize the Premium Card, the standard Marriott Bonvoy Amex can be the more practical choice.

Can Foreign Residents in Japan Apply?
Yes. Foreign nationals with legal residency in Japan can apply for the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card. You’ll generally need the information required for a Japanese credit card application, including a Japanese address and phone number, along with employment and income information.
If you already have an American Express card in another country, American Express Global Card Transfer is worth looking into.
For someone who has recently moved to Japan and hasn’t established much Japanese credit history yet, Global Card Transfer can provide a useful shortcut by leveraging an existing relationship with American Express when applying for a Japanese Amex card.
Approval is still subject to American Express Japan’s credit review.
