Grand Hyatt Seoul Review【WOH-001】: River View Room, Grand Club, Breakfast & Amex FHR

Grand Hyatt Seoul is one of South Korea’s most established five-star hotels, located on the slopes of Namsan Mountain. With its spacious lobby, Han River views, executive lounge, multiple restaurants, and extensive recreational facilities, the property offers a distinctly different experience from the modern boutique hotels that have become increasingly popular in Seoul.

For this stay, I booked through American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) using my U.S. Amex Platinum Card and checked in as a World of Hyatt Globalist member. My original standard room reservation was upgraded to a River View Room. I also had the opportunity to experience the Grand Club, breakfast at The Terrace Kitchen, and lunch at the hotel’s Steak House restaurant.

In this firsthand review, WOH-001, I’ll cover the room, dining experiences, hotel facilities, transportation options, and how I combined World of Hyatt Globalist status with Amex Platinum FHR benefits.

🏨 Grand Hyatt Seoul: Location, Exterior & History

Grand Hyatt Seoul is located in Seoul’s Yongsan District, on the slopes of Namsan Mountain, near Itaewon and Hannam-dong.

The hotel is not directly connected to a subway station, but its elevated location provides a quieter setting and Han River views from select guestrooms. Compared with centrally located hotels designed primarily for sightseeing convenience, Grand Hyatt Seoul is particularly appealing to travelers who plan to spend time enjoying the property itself.

Hotel History: South Korea’s First Hyatt, Opened in 1978

Grand Hyatt Seoul originally opened on July 1, 1978, as Hyatt Regency Seoul, becoming Hyatt’s first hotel in South Korea.

The property was developed by Seoul Miramar Tourism Company on the slopes of Namsan Mountain. In 1993, it was repositioned under the Grand Hyatt brand and renamed Grand Hyatt Seoul.

Over the decades, the hotel has welcomed international business travelers, government officials, and distinguished guests while witnessing Seoul’s transformation into a major global business and tourism destination.

Despite approaching its 50th anniversary, Grand Hyatt Seoul continues to operate as a full-service luxury hotel, with renovations and facility upgrades helping maintain its longstanding appeal.

Lobby & Public Areas

The lobby is particularly spacious, featuring the classic design language of a large international five-star hotel.

Unlike newer hotels that emphasize minimalist interiors, Grand Hyatt Seoul focuses on expansive public spaces, a traditional luxury-hotel atmosphere, and a comprehensive selection of dining and recreational facilities.

🛏️ River View Room: Upgrade from a Standard Room

I originally booked a standard room but received an upgrade to a River View Room at check-in.

Because I was both a World of Hyatt Globalist member and an Amex FHR guest, I was eligible for potential room upgrades through two separate benefit programs. There is no reliable way to determine which benefit was responsible for this particular upgrade.

Room Layout & Design

The guestroom reflects Grand Hyatt Seoul’s classic design style rather than the minimalist aesthetic found in many newly opened hotels.

One of the highlights was the view. From my upgraded room, I could look toward the Han River, which made the stay more enjoyable than a typical city-view room.

Room Amenities

The room includes a water filtration system, allowing guests to access drinking water without relying on disposable plastic bottles.

According to the hotel’s guest information, certain disposable amenities, including toothbrushes and shaving kits, are available for an additional KRW 2,000 per set.

Overall, the room’s appeal comes from the classic five-star atmosphere and views rather than cutting-edge interior design.

☕ Grand Club Lounge: Afternoon Tea & Evening Happy Hour

Grand Hyatt Seoul’s executive lounge, known as the Grand Club, is located on the LL level.

As a World of Hyatt Globalist member, I had access to the lounge and its food and beverage services, including afternoon refreshments and evening cocktails.

Grand Club Seating & Atmosphere

The lounge offers several seating arrangements in a spacious environment.

Beyond dining, it provides a comfortable place to enjoy coffee, relax between activities, or catch up on work without spending additional time in the hotel’s public areas.

Grand Club Opening Hours

The following schedule was provided during my October 2026 stay.

ServiceHours
Lounge Access7:00 AM–9:00 PM
Breakfast7:00–10:30 AM
Afternoon Tea & Refreshments1:00–5:00 PM
Evening Cocktails / Happy Hour6:00–8:00 PM

Afternoon Tea: Coffee & Light Refreshments

During the afternoon, the lounge offers coffee, beverages, and light refreshments.

The selection is relatively simple compared with the evening service, making this period more suitable for a quiet break than a substantial meal.

Evening Happy Hour: Hot Dishes, Cold Selections & Desserts

The evening cocktail service offers a noticeably more extensive food selection, including hot dishes, cold items, and desserts.

Both sets of food photos below were taken during the evening service, rather than the afternoon tea period.

During my stay, children under 13 were not permitted in the lounge during the evening cocktail period.

For Globalist members, the Grand Club’s value extends beyond complimentary food and drinks. Having a comfortable, relatively quiet lounge available throughout the day is another meaningful benefit.

🍳 The Terrace Kitchen Breakfast: Restaurant & Buffet Review

For breakfast, I visited The Terrace Kitchen (TTK) rather than the Grand Club lounge.

Located on the hotel’s L level, The Terrace Kitchen is one of Grand Hyatt Seoul’s main buffet restaurants.

Dining Area & Seating

The restaurant offers a spacious dining environment with multiple seating arrangements.

Compared with the more intimate Grand Club, The Terrace Kitchen has the atmosphere of a full-service hotel buffet restaurant.

Breakfast Buffet

Breakfast VenueLocationHours
The Terrace Kitchen BuffetL Level6:30–10:30 AM
Grand Club BreakfastLL Level7:00–10:30 AM

My Amex FHR reservation included complimentary daily breakfast for two guests.

The Terrace Kitchen offers a broad buffet selection, including hot dishes, vegetables, fruit, bread, and other breakfast items.

Compared with the Grand Club breakfast service, The Terrace Kitchen provides a more extensive selection.

When a hotel stay includes access to the full restaurant breakfast, I generally prefer that option over eating in the executive lounge.

🥩 Steak House: USDA Prime vs. Korean Hanwoo & the FHR Dining Credit

I also had lunch at Grand Hyatt Seoul’s Steak House, where I used the US$100 property credit included with my Amex FHR reservation.

USDA Prime vs. Korean Hanwoo

We ordered two different lunch sets: USDA Prime Striploin and Korean Hanwoo 1++ MB9 Striploin.

Lunch SetPrice
USDA Prime StriploinKRW 105,000
Korean Hanwoo 1++ MB9 StriploinKRW 135,000

The Korean Hanwoo option required a KRW 30,000 upgrade from the standard lunch set.

Our starters included Caesar salad and crab cake. For dessert, we had lime pie and sticky toffee pudding with ice cream, along with beverages.

After trying both steaks, I personally preferred the Korean Hanwoo.

The USDA Prime was good, but the Hanwoo had a richer, more pronounced fat aroma and flavor. For an additional KRW 30,000, I considered the Hanwoo upgrade worthwhile.

How I Used the US$100 FHR Property Credit

Here is the actual restaurant bill from my stay.

ItemAmount
Total Steak House BillKRW 261,000
FHR Property Credit−KRW 135,840
Final Out-of-Pocket CostKRW 125,160

The hotel converted my US$100 FHR property credit into KRW 135,840 and deducted that amount directly from the restaurant bill.

For travelers who already intend to dine at the hotel, this is a particularly useful FHR benefit. In my case, it substantially reduced the cost of a premium steak lunch.

🏊 Club Olympus: Fitness Center, Indoor Pool & Winter Ice Rink

Grand Hyatt Seoul’s recreational facilities are centered around Club Olympus, which includes a fitness center, indoor swimming pool, sauna, and seasonal outdoor facilities.

Fitness Center

The gym offers cardio equipment and strength-training facilities and is available to guests aged 16 and older.

The hotel provides 24-hour fitness center access, although guests need a separate access card outside normal Club Olympus operating hours.

Indoor Swimming Pool

The indoor pool area includes a swimming pool and whirlpool facilities.

The pool also hosts scheduled aquatic fitness classes, which may affect recreational swimming availability during certain periods.

Sauna Fees

The following rates were listed during my stay.

Guest CategoryFee
Regular Hotel GuestKRW 63,000 per person
Guest with Grand Club AccessKRW 31,500 per person

Seasonal Outdoor Ice Rink

Grand Hyatt Seoul changes the use of its outdoor pool area depending on the season.

During my late-October visit, the outdoor pool was being converted into a winter ice rink. The photo below shows the seasonal setup in progress, not an operating ice rink.

💳 Amex Platinum FHR: US$300 Hotel Credit & US$100 Property Credit

I booked this stay through American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts using my U.S. American Express Platinum Card.

Two separate benefits helped reduce the overall cost:

  • US$300 Hotel Credit: A statement credit associated with an eligible hotel booking through my U.S. Amex Platinum Card.
  • US$100 Property Credit: An on-property benefit included with the FHR reservation.

These credits work differently and should not be confused with each other.

Actual Room Cost

My American Express booking confirmation showed the following charges:

ItemAmount
Room RateUS$308.59
Taxes & FeesUS$64.81
Total Prepaid Booking CostUS$373.40
Amex Platinum Hotel Credit−US$300.00
Effective Room CostUS$73.40

For this October 2026 booking, I was able to use the US$300 Hotel Credit on a one-night stay.

However, the applicable FHR Hotel Credit rules change in 2027 to require a minimum two-night stay, so this particular one-night redemption example should not be assumed to work under the newer terms.

Importantly, the US$300 Hotel Credit was a credit card statement benefit, not a discount applied by the hotel at checkout.

I received a River View Room upgrade and used the full US$100 property credit at Steak House.

Because I was also a World of Hyatt Globalist member, some benefits—particularly breakfast and potential room upgrades—overlapped. Having both benefits does not mean receiving duplicate breakfasts or two separate room upgrades.

🚌 Transportation: Hotel Shuttle & Incheon Airport Bus 6702

Grand Hyatt Seoul is not directly adjacent to a subway station, making the hotel’s shuttle service and airport limousine bus especially useful.

Complimentary Hotel Shuttle

The hotel operates a complimentary shuttle connecting the property with Hangangjin Station and Myeongdong.

💳 World of Hyatt Credit Cards & Globalist Status

My Grand Club access during this stay came from my World of Hyatt Globalist membership.

For frequent Hyatt guests, Globalist benefits such as club lounge access, complimentary breakfast, and eligible room upgrades can be especially valuable at full-service properties like Grand Hyatt Seoul.

In the United States, Chase offers two World of Hyatt co-branded credit cards that can help cardholders earn Hyatt points and Elite Night Credits.

Holding either card does not automatically grant Globalist status. Members must still meet the applicable World of Hyatt qualification requirements.

🏁 Final Verdict: Is Grand Hyatt Seoul Worth Staying At?

Grand Hyatt Seoul stands out for its comprehensive facilities and traditional five-star hotel atmosphere.

During this stay, I received an upgrade from a standard room to a River View Room, enjoyed Grand Club afternoon refreshments and evening Happy Hour as a Globalist member, and had an extensive breakfast at The Terrace Kitchen.

The Steak House lunch was another highlight. Between the USDA Prime and Korean Hanwoo steaks, I preferred the richer flavor of the Hanwoo.

The hotel’s recreational facilities—including its fitness center, indoor swimming pool, and seasonal outdoor attractions—also make it appealing to guests who want to spend more time at the property.

By booking through Amex FHR, I used a US$300 Hotel Credit toward the prepaid reservation and a separate US$100 Property Credit at Steak House, significantly reducing my effective accommodation and dining costs.

The main drawback is location. Grand Hyatt Seoul is not particularly convenient for travelers who plan to use the subway frequently throughout the day.

However, for guests who prioritize hotel facilities, executive lounge access, dining, and scenic views, Grand Hyatt Seoul remains an appealing option.

For travelers who hold both World of Hyatt Globalist status and the U.S. Amex Platinum Card, my stay is a practical example of how the two benefit programs can complement each other.
