Avios Guide: British Airways, Qatar, Finnair, Iberia & Aer Lingus
Avios is unusual because it is not tied to a single airline loyalty program.
British Airways, Qatar Airways, Finnair, Iberia, and Aer Lingus all use Avios, but each program has its own award pricing, taxes and fees, and change or cancellation rules. That means the exact same partner flight can cost very different amounts depending on which Avios program you use.
The most practical Avios strategy is simple:
Find award space → compare Avios programs → move Avios → book.
✈️ What Is Avios?
Avios is a shared rewards currency used by several airline loyalty programs.
| Avios Program | Airline | Best Used For |
|---|---|---|
| British Airways Club | British Airways | Partner awards, short nonstop flights |
| Qatar Airways Privilege Club | Qatar Airways | Qatar flights, partner awards |
| Finnair Plus | Finnair | Zone-based partner awards |
| Iberia Club | Iberia | Iberia long-haul flights |
| Aer Lingus AerClub | Aer Lingus | Ireland–North America |
| Vueling Club | Vueling | Vueling flights |
| Loganair Loyalty | Loganair | Loganair flights |
If you are new to oneworld airlines and partner awards, start with my oneworld Complete Guide.
For partner awards, the three Avios programs worth comparing most often are:
British Airways Club, Qatar Airways Privilege Club, and Finnair Plus.
Iberia and Aer Lingus are generally more useful for their own flights.

💳 How to Earn Avios with U.S. Credit Card Points
The U.S. has several easy ways to earn transferable points that can become Avios.
| U.S. Points Program | Direct Avios Transfer Partners |
|---|---|
| American Express Membership Rewards | British Airways / Qatar Airways / Iberia / Aer Lingus |
| Chase Ultimate Rewards | British Airways / Iberia / Aer Lingus |
| Citi ThankYou Points | Qatar Airways |
| Capital One Miles | British Airways / Qatar Airways / Finnair |
| Bilt Rewards | British Airways / Qatar Airways / Iberia / Aer Lingus |
These transfers are generally available at a standard 1:1 ratio.
Because Avios can later be moved between participating programs, your bank does not necessarily need to transfer directly to the airline program you eventually use for the award.
For example:
Citi TYP → Qatar Airways → move Avios if needed
or:
Capital One Miles → Finnair Plus
The better strategy is therefore:
Keep bank points flexible → find award space → compare Avios programs → transfer only when ready to book.
For a broader comparison, see my U.S. Transferable Credit Card Points Guide.
🇯🇵 How to Earn Avios with Credit Cards in Japan
For travelers living in Japan, the two most useful Avios sources are American Express Membership Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy Points.
Japan-issued American Express Membership Rewards can transfer directly to:
- British Airways Club
- Qatar Airways Privilege Club
| Japan Amex MR | Avios Transfer Rate |
|---|---|
| Standard | 2,000 MR → 1,000 Avios |
| Membership Rewards Plus | 1,250 MR → 1,000 Avios |
That makes Japan-issued Amex MR a useful entry point into the Avios ecosystem even if the award is eventually booked through another Avios program.
For the full Japan transfer chart, see my Japan Credit Card Points to Airline Miles Guide.
You can also compare the main Japan-issued Amex cards in my American Express Personal Cards in Japan Comparison.
🔄 Can You Transfer Avios Between Programs?
Yes. This is one of the biggest advantages of Avios.
Avios.com currently connects participating programs including:
| Avios Program | Account Linking |
|---|---|
| British Airways Club | ✅ |
| Qatar Airways Privilege Club | ✅ |
| Finnair Plus | ✅ |
| Iberia Club | ✅ |
| Aer Lingus AerClub | ✅ |
| Vueling Club | ✅ |
| Loganair Loyalty | ✅ |
Once your accounts are linked, you can move Avios between eligible loyalty accounts registered in your name.
British Airways Club is still a convenient Avios hub account, while Avios.com is now the main interface for linking participating programs and moving Avios.
The basic workflow is:
Find award space → compare programs → move Avios → book.
Account Linking Requirements
| Requirement | Rule |
|---|---|
| Account owner | Must be the same person |
| Personal information | Must match across accounts |
| New accounts | Both accounts generally need to be active for at least 30 days |
If you expect to use Qatar Airways, Finnair, Iberia, or Aer Lingus in the future, it is worth creating those loyalty accounts ahead of time.
📊 Which Avios Program Is Best for Each Redemption?
British Airways, Qatar Airways, Finnair, Iberia, and Aer Lingus all use Avios, but that does not mean the same award costs the same across programs.
The required Avios, taxes and fees, award availability, and cancellation rules can all differ.
There is no single Avios program that is best for every route.
All prices below are one-way.
British Airways Club
British Airways Club is especially useful for three types of awards:
BA short-haul flights within Europe, BA long-haul flights from London, and selected short-haul partner awards.
| Good Redemption | Airline | Economy | Business |
|---|---|---|---|
| London–Amsterdam | British Airways | ~10K | ~16.5K |
| London–Rome | British Airways | ~13K | ~22K |
| London–New York | British Airways | ~27.5K | ~88K |
| Sydney–Melbourne / Brisbane | Qantas | ~6K–7K | ~12K–14K |
British Airways short-haul flights within Europe can be particularly useful with Reward Flight Saver, especially when cash fares become expensive close to departure.
For partner awards, BA is generally most attractive for:
short-haul + nonstop flights.
Connecting itineraries are often priced segment by segment, so BA may become less competitive when a connection is required.
Qatar Airways Privilege Club
Qatar Airways Privilege Club is especially useful for:
Qatar Airways flights and short-haul Cathay Pacific awards within Asia.
| Good Redemption | Airline | Economy | Business |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hong Kong–Taipei | Cathay Pacific | 6K | 12.5K |
| Hong Kong–Bangkok | Cathay Pacific | 9K | 16.5K |
| Hong Kong–Tokyo / Osaka | Cathay Pacific | ~11K | ~22K |
| HND / NRT / KIX–Doha (DOH) | Qatar Airways | ~30K | ~60K |
| Doha (DOH)–Western Europe | Qatar Airways | ~21.5K | ~43K |
| U.S.–Doha (DOH) | Qatar Airways | ~35K | ~70K |
Cathay Pacific short-haul awards are one of Qatar Privilege Club’s biggest strengths.
For example:
HKG–TPE: 6K Economy / 12.5K Business
Japan–HKG: ~11K Economy / ~22K Business
Qatar Airways flights do not always price the same on every date.
If you see a Flexi Award, it generally requires 2x the normal Avios, so always check the award type before booking.
Finnair Plus
Finnair Plus can be useful for both:
Finnair-operated flights and partner awards on JAL, Cathay Pacific, Qatar Airways, and others.
Finnair-Operated Flights
| Good Redemption Region | Economy | Business |
|---|---|---|
| Helsinki–Northern Europe | 6.5K | 10K |
| Helsinki–Central Europe | 12K | 18K |
| Helsinki–Western / Southern Europe | 13K | 20K |
| Helsinki–Doha / Dubai / India | 28K | 55K |
| Helsinki–Japan / Singapore / major Asia and North America routes | 30K | 62.5K |
Finnair Partner Awards
| Good Redemption | Airline | Economy | Business |
|---|---|---|---|
| Japan domestic | JAL | 8.5K | 14.5K |
| Japan–Korea | JAL | 11.5K | 19K |
| Japan–China / Guam | JAL | 13.5K | 24.5K |
| Japan–Europe / U.S. | JAL | 33.5K | 94.25K |
| Hong Kong–Taiwan / China / Philippines | Cathay Pacific | 11K | 18K |
| Asia–Europe | Cathay Pacific | 31K | 72.5K |
| Doha (DOH)–Europe | Qatar Airways | 17K | 41.25K |
| Doha (DOH)–Rest of Asia / South Africa | Qatar Airways | 23K | 55K |
These are official Finnair Plus partner award prices.
However:
An official award price does not mean Finnair Plus will always have access to the seat.
With partners such as JAL, it is quite common to see award availability through:
British Airways Club or Alaska Airlines / Atmos Rewards
while Finnair Plus shows nothing.
So this table should be understood as:
the number of Avios required when Finnair Plus can actually access the award seat.
If Finnair cannot see the seat, BA and Alaska / Atmos Rewards are useful for cross-checking whether partner award inventory exists elsewhere.
Finnair Plus is also worth watching as a way to buy Avios. During promotions, its acquisition cost can be lower than buying Avios through other programs.

Iberia Club
Iberia Club is most useful for:
Iberia-operated flights from Madrid to North America.
Typical one-way Off-Peak prices include:
| Good Redemption | Economy | Business |
|---|---|---|
| Madrid–Boston / New York / Washington, D.C. | 16K | 40.5K |
| Madrid–Chicago / Miami / Dallas / Orlando | ~20K | ~50.5K |
| Madrid–Los Angeles / San Francisco | ~24K | ~60.5K |
The U.S. East Coast is especially attractive:
16K Economy / 40.5K Business.
Iberia uses Peak and Off-Peak pricing, so always check the actual date before transferring points.
Aer Lingus AerClub
AerClub is most useful for one clear purpose:
Ireland–North America.
Typical Off-Peak one-way prices include:
| Good Redemption | Economy | Business |
|---|---|---|
| Dublin–Boston / New York / Newark | 13K | 50K |
| Dublin–Chicago / Washington / Toronto | 13K | 50K |
| Dublin–Denver / Los Angeles / San Francisco | 16.25K | 62.5K |
| Dublin–Seattle / Miami / Orlando / Las Vegas | 16.25K | 62.5K |
A simple way to remember the five programs:
| Avios Program | Best Starting Point |
|---|---|
| British Airways Club | BA Europe short-haul + short-haul partners |
| Qatar Airways Privilege Club | Qatar Airways + Cathay Pacific short-haul |
| Finnair Plus | Finnair + JAL / Cathay / Qatar partner awards |
| Iberia Club | Madrid–North America |
| Aer Lingus AerClub | Ireland–North America |
🎫 Which Avios Awards Cannot Be Booked Entirely Online?
The five Avios programs do not have the same online booking capabilities.
The most important rule is:
If an award does not appear online, that does not always mean the program cannot book it.
| Avios Program | Online Booking | If It Cannot Be Done Online |
|---|---|---|
| British Airways | BA + most partners | Contact Centre |
| Qatar Airways | Qatar easy; some partners incomplete | Partner Award Request / customer service |
| Finnair Plus | Only selected partners online | Chat / Customer Service |
| Iberia Club | Iberia + some partners | Iberia Club Service Centre |
| Aer Lingus | Best for Aer Lingus itself | Use another Avios program for partners |
Qatar: What If a Partner Award Does Not Show Online?
Qatar is the Avios program where this issue matters the most.
Qatar Airways-operated flights can normally be booked directly online:
Search → select the flight → book.
Partner awards are different.
It is common to find a seat through BA or another partner while Qatar’s website shows no result.
Do not immediately assume Qatar cannot book it.
A better process is:
First confirm that partner award inventory exists.
For JAL, for example, you can check:
British Airways Club
and also:
Alaska Airlines / Atmos Rewards.
If Qatar still does not show the flight, you can submit a:
Partner Award Request
through Qatar Privilege Club.
Prepare:
- Travel date
- Airline
- Flight number
- Origin
- Destination
- Cabin
- Passenger information
Qatar may temporarily hold the required Avios while the request is being processed.
If the award cannot ultimately be issued, the Avios are returned.
You can also contact Qatar Privilege Club customer service and provide the exact flight number and date.
However:
BA or Alaska seeing a seat does not guarantee Qatar has access to the same partner inventory.
The final result depends on whether Qatar itself can access that award seat.
Finnair: Only Selected Partners Can Be Booked Online
Finnair currently allows online award booking for a limited group of partners, including:
- British Airways
- Cathay Pacific
- Iberia
- Japan Airlines
- Qantas
- Qatar Airways
Other Finnair partners may have an official Finnair Plus award chart but still cannot be booked completely online.
Examples include:
- American Airlines
- Alaska Airlines / Hawaiian Airlines
- Fiji Airways
- Malaysia Airlines
- Oman Air
- Royal Air Maroc
- Royal Jordanian
- SriLankan Airlines
These awards generally require:
Finnair Chat
or
Customer Service.
If BA or Alaska sees a seat while Finnair does not, you can still ask Finnair Chat to check it manually.
If the agent also cannot see the seat, Finnair does not currently have access to that partner inventory.
British Airways: Most Partner Awards Are Searchable Online
BA is one of the most useful Avios programs for checking oneworld partner availability.
JAL, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, and many other oneworld partners can generally be searched online.
That makes BA useful for both booking and confirming:
whether a partner award seat actually exists.
If a specific booking cannot be completed online, British Airways Contact Centre can assist.
Iberia: Easy for Iberia, Mixed for Partners
Iberia-operated awards can be searched and booked directly through Iberia Club.
Some partner awards are also available online.
If Iberia.com cannot complete the award you need, you can contact:
Iberia Club Service Centre
for assistance.
Before issuing a partner award through Iberia, check the cancellation rules for that specific ticket.
Partner awards do not necessarily follow Iberia’s own Comfort Award rules.
Aer Lingus: Primarily Use It for Aer Lingus Flights
AerClub is best used for:
Aer Lingus-operated Reward Flights.
If you want to book JAL, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, or other oneworld partners, there is usually little reason to force the booking through AerClub.
Because Avios can be moved between programs, it is generally easier to use:
BA / Qatar / Finnair
for those partner awards.
💰 Cancellation Rules for the Five Major Avios Programs
Avios can be moved between programs, but:
the cancellation policy is determined by the program that actually issued the ticket.
Do not compare only the number of Avios required.
| Avios Program | Cancellation Fee | Main Deadline | Avios Returned? |
|---|---|---|---|
| British Airways | Varies by market | >24 hours before first flight | ✅ |
| Qatar Airways | US$25 / US$100 | At least 3 hours before departure | ✅, not within 3 hours |
| Finnair Plus | €50 / ticket | Safer to cancel >24 hours | ✅ |
| Iberia Club | From €25 / US$40 | Usually >24 hours | Depends on fare |
| Aer Lingus | €42.50 / person | >24 hours before outbound | ✅ |
British Airways Club
For a BA Reward Flight, the key deadline is:
at least 24 hours before the first flight in the itinerary.
Cancellation / Avios redeposit fees vary by market.
| Market | Cancellation / Avios Redeposit Fee |
|---|---|
| UK / Ireland | £35 per person / ticket |
| Eurozone | €42.50 per person / ticket |
| U.S. | US$55 per person / ticket |
| Canada | C$58 per person / ticket |
| Japan | ¥5,740 per person / ticket |
| Hong Kong | HK$427 per person / ticket |
| Singapore | S$69 per person / ticket |
| Australia | A$63 per person / ticket |
If the reservation cannot be handled online and requires the BA Service Centre, some markets may charge an additional service fee.
Common examples include:
UK £15, Eurozone €15, U.S. US$25, Japan ¥2,000.
Gold members can have this additional Service Centre Fee waived.
If you cancel within:
24 hours of the first flight
the Avios are generally no longer refundable.
Partially used Reward Flights also do not qualify for the normal unused-ticket refund rules.
Qatar Airways Privilege Club
Qatar’s rules are relatively straightforward.
| Time Before Departure | Burgundy / Silver | Gold / Platinum Primary Member |
|---|---|---|
| More than 24 hours | US$25 | Free |
| 3–24 hours | US$100 | Free |
| Less than 3 hours / No-show | Avios forfeited | Avios forfeited |
Fees are:
per passenger.
The Gold / Platinum waiver applies only to:
the primary member.
Awards issued for other passengers remain subject to the normal fees.
As long as an eligible cancellation is completed at least 3 hours before departure:
the Avios can be returned.
Within 3 hours of departure, the Avios are no longer refunded.
Finnair Plus
Finnair Plus award tickets currently have:
Change fee: €50 / ticket
Cancellation fee: €50 / ticket
Eligible unused award tickets can have the Avios returned.
However, Finnair currently has inconsistent wording across its official rules regarding the final cancellation deadline.
Some rules refer to:
3 hours before departure
while other booking conditions refer to:
more than 24 hours before departure.
For practical purposes, the safer rule is:
cancel at least 24 hours before departure.
Partially used award tickets generally cannot be refunded.
Iberia Club
For Iberia-operated awards, the cancellation rules depend heavily on the Award Fare selected.
| Iberia Award Fare | Changes | Cancellation |
|---|---|---|
| Economy Basic | €25 / US$40 | ❌ Non-refundable |
| Economy Comfort | Free | €25 / US$40 |
| Premium Economy Comfort | €25 / US$40 | €25 / US$40 |
| Business Comfort | €25 / US$40 | €25 / US$40 |
Comfort Awards generally need to be cancelled:
at least 24 hours before departure.
The most important rule is:
Basic Awards are non-refundable.
If you use Iberia Club for a partner airline, check the fare conditions of that specific award ticket.
Do not assume the Iberia-operated Comfort Award rules apply.
Aer Lingus AerClub
For an Aer Lingus Reward Flight, cancelling more than:
24 hours before the first outbound flight
normally allows the Avios to be returned.
The typical cancellation fee is:
€42.50 per person.
Within:
24 hours of departure
the Avios are no longer refunded.
Changes must also normally be made more than 24 hours before departure and may require an amendment fee plus any difference in Avios or taxes.
🔍 The Most Practical Avios Search and Booking Process
There is no need to make Avios booking complicated.
| Step | What to Do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Find award availability |
| 2 | Confirm the operating airline and flight number |
| 3 | Check the most relevant Avios programs |
| 4 | Compare Avios + taxes + cancellation rules |
| 5 | If online booking fails, use Request / Chat / customer service |
| 6 | Transfer credit card points only after confirming the seat |
| 7 | Move Avios between programs if necessary |
| 8 | Complete the booking |
For partner awards, do not rely on just one program.
For example, with JAL you can first use:
BA + Alaska / Atmos Rewards
to verify award availability, then check whether Finnair or Qatar can access the same inventory.
For Cathay Pacific, it is especially useful to compare:
BA + Qatar + Finnair.
Most importantly:
Do not transfer credit card points first and start searching afterward.
Once bank points are transferred to an airline program, they normally cannot be transferred back.
⚠️ What Should You Check Before Using Avios?
| What to Check | Why |
|---|---|
| Find the seat before transferring points | Bank points usually cannot be transferred back |
| Search multiple partner programs | Award inventory may differ |
| Online search failure does not always mean impossible | Qatar and Finnair have offline booking channels |
| An award chart does not guarantee availability | Especially important with Finnair partners |
| Compare Avios + taxes | Lowest Avios does not always mean lowest total cost |
| Check cancellation rules before booking | Policies differ significantly |
| Watch Peak / Off-Peak dates | BA, Iberia, and Aer Lingus use date-based pricing |
| Watch for Flexi Awards | Qatar Flexi generally requires 2x Avios |
🏁 How Should You Actually Use Avios?
The biggest advantage of Avios is not that one airline program is always the cheapest.
It is that:
the same Avios currency can be moved to the program that works best for a specific award.
A simple way to remember it:
British Airways: UK–Europe short-haul + short-haul partners
Qatar: Qatar Airways + Cathay Pacific short-haul
Finnair: Finnair + JAL / Cathay / Qatar partner awards
Iberia: Madrid–North America
Aer Lingus: Ireland–North America
After finding the award, compare:
Avios + taxes + cancellation rules.
If the ticket cannot be booked online, check whether Request, Chat, or customer service can issue it.
Only then should you transfer points and complete the booking.
