The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card and Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card earn the same Marriott Bonvoy points, but the most important reason to compare them is not their earning rates.
It is Elite Night Credits.
The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant provides 25 Elite Night Credits each calendar year plus automatic Platinum Elite status, while the Marriott Bonvoy Business provides another 15 Elite Night Credits.
Eligible Marriott personal-card and business-card Elite Night Credits can stack:
25 + 15 = 40 Elite Night Credits
That makes Brilliant vs Business different from a typical credit-card comparison. For Marriott members pursuing higher elite tiers, holding both cards can be more important than choosing between them.

💳 Rewards: Travel vs Business Spending
Both cards earn 6X Marriott Bonvoy points at participating Marriott hotels and 2X on general purchases, so there is little difference when the cards are used primarily for Marriott stays.
Brilliant leans more toward travel spending, earning 3X at restaurants worldwide and 3X on flights booked directly with airlines.
Business earns 4X at restaurants worldwide and adds several U.S. business categories, including gas stations, wireless telephone services and shipping.
For someone with meaningful business expenses, the Business card can therefore complement Brilliant rather than duplicate it.
But for frequent Marriott guests, the difference between 3X and 4X is much less important than the cards’ elite-status and Elite Night Credit benefits.
💰 Free Night Awards and Annual Benefits
Brilliant provides an annual 85K Free Night Award after renewal. Marriott allows up to 25K points to be added when redeeming an eligible FNA, potentially increasing its redemption ceiling to 110K points.
Business provides an annual 35K Free Night Award, also eligible for Marriott’s FNA top-off feature. Spending $60,000 in a calendar year earns an additional 35K FNA.
The two certificates therefore serve different purposes.
Brilliant’s 85K FNA has much greater access to higher-end Marriott properties, while Business adds another annual certificate with a lower redemption ceiling.
Brilliant also provides up to $25 per month in dining statement credits, while Business offers access to the Marriott Bonvoy Amex Business Card Rate, which can provide up to a 7% discount on eligible Marriott bookings.
✈️ Brilliant Provides Premium Benefits; Business Adds Elite Nights
Brilliant is the premium card of the two.
It provides automatic Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite, along with benefits such as Priority Pass and an eligible Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit.
Business provides Gold Elite status.
If you already hold Brilliant, the Business card’s Gold Elite status adds little because Brilliant already gives you the higher Platinum tier.
That changes how Business should be evaluated.
For a Brilliant cardholder, its more important benefits are:
15 Elite Night Credits + 35K FNA + Marriott Business Rate
The additional 15 Elite Night Credits are particularly important because they belong to the business-card side of Marriott’s credit-card ENC rules.
🔄 Both Cards Earn Marriott Bonvoy Points
There is no points-ecosystem decision here. Both cards earn Marriott Bonvoy points.
Those points can be redeemed for Marriott stays or transferred to a wide range of airline loyalty programs.
For a complete overview of Marriott points, elite status, Free Night Awards and airline transfers, see the Marriott Bonvoy Complete Guide.
The strategy behind holding both cards is therefore not to create two separate points ecosystems. It is to combine two different sets of Marriott benefits.
⚠️ The Key Strategy: 25 + 15 Elite Night Credits
This is the most important part of the Brilliant vs Business comparison.
Marriott does not simply add the annual Elite Night Credits from every Marriott personal credit card you hold.
However, eligible members can receive annual Elite Night Credits from an eligible personal Marriott card and a Marriott business card.
That is what makes this combination work:
| Card | Annual Elite Night Credits |
|---|---|
| Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant | 25 |
| Marriott Bonvoy Business | 15 |
| Total | 40 |
With both cards, an eligible member can therefore begin each calendar year with 40 Elite Night Credits before completing a single hotel night.
For Brilliant cardholders, those 40 nights are not primarily about reaching Platinum Elite. Brilliant already provides Platinum automatically.
The more interesting target is Titanium Elite.
Titanium Elite requires 75 Elite Night Credits:
75 − 40 = 35 nights
Starting with 40 credit-card Elite Night Credits means you need another 35 qualifying nights during the year to reach the 75-night threshold.
Those Elite Night Credits also move you toward Marriott’s 50-night and 75-night Annual Choice Benefit thresholds.
This is the main strategic reason Brilliant and Business can make more sense together than as an either-or decision.
👤 Brilliant, Business, or Both?
Brilliant makes more sense as a standalone card when the priority is automatic Platinum Elite, a higher-value annual FNA and premium travel benefits.
Business has a different role. Its core value comes from 15 Elite Night Credits, an annual 35K FNA, business-category earning and access to the Marriott Business Rate.
For Marriott members actively pursuing annual elite-night thresholds, however, there is a third strategy:
Brilliant + Business = 40 Elite Night Credits per year
If your target is Titanium Elite or Marriott’s 50-night and 75-night milestones, that combination can matter far more than the difference between 3X and 4X spending categories.
🏁 Bottom Line
Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant and Marriott Bonvoy Business serve different roles.
Brilliant centers on Platinum Elite, 25 Elite Night Credits, an 85K FNA and premium travel benefits.
Business adds 15 Elite Night Credits, a 35K FNA, business-category rewards and the Marriott Business Rate.
The most important result of holding both is simple:
25 + 15 = 40 Elite Night Credits every calendar year.
Because Brilliant already provides Platinum Elite, the real value of those 40 nights is the head start toward Marriott’s 50-night and 75-night thresholds—especially Titanium Elite at 75 nights.
