Delta SkyMiles Guide: Award Flights, Partners & Sweet Spots
Delta SkyMiles is the frequent flyer program of Delta Air Lines, a founding member of the SkyTeam alliance. In addition to Delta-operated flights, SkyMiles can be redeemed for award tickets on partner airlines such as Air France, KLM, Korean Air, Vietnam Airlines, and Garuda Indonesia.
Unlike programs with fixed award charts, Delta uses dynamic award pricing. The number of miles required can vary significantly depending on the route, travel date, operating airline, and direction of travel.
This guide covers how to earn and redeem Delta SkyMiles, partner airlines, business class sweet spots, SkyMiles Deals, TakeOff 15, award booking rules, cancellation policies, and Medallion status. The redemption examples are based on actual award searches conducted in October 2026.
✈️ What Is Delta SkyMiles?
| Feature | Delta SkyMiles |
|---|---|
| Airline | Delta Air Lines |
| Alliance | SkyTeam |
| Loyalty currency | SkyMiles |
| Award pricing | Dynamic |
| Published fixed award chart | No |
| Airline partners | SkyTeam and select non-alliance partners |
| U.S. credit card transfer partner | Amex Membership Rewards (1:1) |
| Mileage expiration | Miles never expire |
| Main promotions | SkyMiles Deals, TakeOff 15 |
| Free stopovers | Not permitted |
| Elite status tiers | Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond Medallion |
SkyMiles can be useful for both Delta-operated flights and international partner awards. However, the best redemption opportunities often require searching specific routes rather than relying on a published award chart.

💳 How to Earn Delta SkyMiles
Delta SkyMiles can be earned through Delta flights, Partner Airlines, credit cards, and other partners. In both the U.S. and Japan, American Express offers ways to earn SkyMiles through Membership Rewards transfers and Delta co-branded credit cards.
| Earning Method | Details |
|---|---|
| Delta flights | Earn based on eligible fares and Medallion Status |
| Partner Airlines | Earn based on the airline and booking class |
| 🇺🇸 U.S. American Express MR | Transfer 1:1 to Delta SkyMiles |
| 🇯🇵 Japan American Express MR | 1,250 MR Points → 1,000 SkyMiles with MR Plus |
| 🇺🇸 U.S. Delta Amex | Earn SkyMiles; eligible cards also earn MQDs toward Medallion Status through MQD Headstart and MQD Boost |
| 🇯🇵 Japan Delta Amex | Earn SkyMiles and qualify for or maintain Medallion Status by meeting eligible annual spending requirements |
| Hotels and other partners | Earn according to each partner’s rules |
American Express Membership Rewards
U.S. American Express Membership Rewards points transfer to Delta SkyMiles at a 1:1 ratio. Transfers to U.S. airline frequent-flyer programs are also subject to the applicable Excise Tax Offset Fee.
Membership Rewards earned with Japan-issued cards such as the American Express Gold Preferred Card and American Express Platinum Card can also be transferred to Delta SkyMiles. With Membership Rewards Plus, the transfer rate is 1,250 MR Points → 1,000 SkyMiles.
Because Delta uses dynamic award pricing, it is generally better to check the required SkyMiles before transferring points.
Delta Amex Credit Cards
Delta American Express co-branded cards are issued in both the United States and Japan, and cards in both markets can help members earn Medallion Status in addition to earning SkyMiles. The qualification systems, however, are different.
In the U.S., the lineup includes the Delta SkyMiles Gold, Platinum, and Reserve cards and their Business versions. Eligible Platinum and Reserve cards provide MQD Headstart each qualification year and MQD Boost on eligible card spending, allowing cardmembers to earn MQDs toward Silver, Gold, Platinum, or Diamond Medallion Status. Eligible U.S. Delta Amex cards also offer TakeOff 15, reducing the SkyMiles required for eligible Delta-operated award flights by at least 15%.
In Japan, American Express issues the Delta SkyMiles American Express Card and Delta SkyMiles American Express Gold Card. In addition to earning SkyMiles on purchases, cardmembers can qualify for or maintain Delta Medallion Status by meeting the applicable annual spending requirements.
For a detailed comparison of the two qualification systems, see the Japan vs. U.S. Delta Credit Cards comparison.
🤝 Delta SkyMiles Airline Partners
Delta SkyMiles can be used for award travel on participating SkyTeam airlines and selected non-alliance partners.
However, mileage earning and award redemption eligibility are not always identical. Not every partner flight or cabin is available for SkyMiles redemption.
| Region | Major Partner Airlines |
|---|---|
| Europe | Air France, KLM, SAS |
| Asia | Korean Air, China Airlines, Vietnam Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, China Eastern |
| Americas | Aeromexico, LATAM, WestJet |
| Africa | Kenya Airways |
| Other notable partner | Virgin Atlantic |
Partner award availability depends on the operating airline, route, cabin, and travel date. Availability shown by another loyalty program does not necessarily mean the same seats can be booked with Delta SkyMiles.
📊 Delta SkyMiles Award Pricing
Delta does not publish a fixed partner award chart. Award prices must be checked through Delta’s website or app.
The following are business class prices found in actual award searches.
| Route Category | One-Way Business Class |
|---|---|
| Asia → Europe | 80,000 miles |
| Japan ↔ Indonesia | 40,000 miles |
| Indonesia → South Korea | 40,000 miles |
| Japan → South Korea | 15,000 miles |
| Europe → Middle East | 42,500 miles |
| Europe → East Africa | 65,000 miles |
These are observed prices for specific routes, not guaranteed rates for every destination within the same region.
North America–Asia and North America–Europe awards are also subject to dynamic pricing. Neither region is included among the primary business class sweet spots in this guide.
⭐ Best Delta SkyMiles Business Class Sweet Spots
1. Asia to Europe: 80,000 Miles in Business Class
Several nonstop flights from Asia to Europe were available for 80,000 SkyMiles in business class.
| Route | Operating Airline | One-Way Business Class |
|---|---|---|
| TPE → AMS | KLM | 80,000 miles |
| NRT → AMS | KLM | 80,000 miles |
| HND → CDG | Air France | 80,000 miles |
| SGN → CDG | Vietnam Airlines | 80,000 miles |
| CGK → AMS | Garuda Indonesia | 80,000 miles |
These flights are approximately 13–15 hours long. The observed cash charges were also relatively low for departures from Asia, making this one of the more compelling Delta partner redemption opportunities.
On the Tokyo–Europe searches, economy was priced at 50,000 miles while business class was 80,000 miles. The additional 30,000 miles may be worthwhile for a long-haul flight.

2. Japan to Indonesia: 40,000 Miles in Business Class
Garuda Indonesia business class between Tokyo and Jakarta was available for 40,000 SkyMiles in both directions.
| Route | Operating Airline | One-Way Business Class |
|---|---|---|
| HND → CGK | Garuda Indonesia | 40,000 miles |
| CGK → HND | Garuda Indonesia | 40,000 miles |
| CGK → ICN | Garuda Indonesia | 40,000 miles |
Tokyo–Jakarta flights take approximately 7–8 hours, making 40,000 miles a useful business class redemption.
For HND → CGK, the same search showed economy at 22,500 miles and business class at 40,000 miles—a difference of just 17,500 miles.

3. Europe to the Middle East and Africa
| Route | Operating Airline | One-Way Business Class |
|---|---|---|
| CDG → DXB | Air France | 42,500 miles |
| AMS → NBO | KLM | 65,000 miles |
Paris to Dubai and Amsterdam to Nairobi are additional partner award opportunities worth comparing.
However, cash surcharges on Europe-originating itineraries can be substantial. Always review the total cash component before deciding whether to redeem SkyMiles.
4. Japan to South Korea: 15,000 Miles in Business Class
Korean Air business class from Tokyo Haneda to Seoul Incheon was found for 15,000 SkyMiles one-way.
While the mileage price is relatively low, the flight is short and the observed cash charge was ¥6,330. This is a secondary option rather than a top redemption recommendation.
⚠️ Why Direction of Travel Matters: Europe vs. Asia
The same 80,000-mile business class award can have dramatically different cash charges depending on the direction of travel.
| Route | Business Class | Cash Charges |
|---|---|---|
| NRT → AMS | 80,000 miles | ¥6,160 |
| AMS → NRT | 80,000 miles | €778 |
| HND → CDG | 80,000 miles | ¥6,180 |
| CDG → HND | 80,000 miles | €872 |
In these searches, Japan-originating flights had significantly lower cash charges than the reverse itineraries from Europe.
This makes Asia-to-Europe redemptions more attractive in the tested examples. For departures from Europe, compare both the mileage price and the cash component against alternative loyalty programs.

🔥 SkyMiles Deals
Delta periodically offers SkyMiles Award Deals, which can reduce the mileage cost of select routes and travel dates.

| Routes | Select domestic and international flights |
| Travel dates | Promotion-specific |
| Cabins | Depends on the offer |
| Where to search | Delta.com or the Fly Delta app |
| TakeOff 15 | May combine on eligible awards |
SkyMiles Deals are not fixed award chart prices. Routes, dates, and available seats can change.
For travelers who frequently fly Delta-operated routes, checking these promotions can be worthwhile.
💰 TakeOff 15: Delta Amex Award Discount
Eligible U.S. Delta SkyMiles American Express Gold, Platinum, and Reserve cardmembers, including qualifying Business cardmembers, receive TakeOff 15.
| Feature | TakeOff 15 |
|---|---|
| Mileage discount | At least 15% |
| Eligible flights | Qualifying Delta and Delta Connection-operated awards |
| Partner-operated flights | Not eligible |
| Taxes and fees | Not discounted |
| Booking channel | Delta.com or Fly Delta app |
For example, an eligible award priced at 40,000 miles would cost 34,000 miles after a 15% discount.
TakeOff 15 can also apply to qualifying SkyMiles Deals.
The Air France, KLM, and Garuda Indonesia partner awards discussed in this guide do not qualify for TakeOff 15.
🌏 Delta SkyMiles vs. Flying Blue
Delta SkyMiles and Air France–KLM Flying Blue both provide access to participating SkyTeam partner awards, but pricing and availability can differ.
| Feature | Delta SkyMiles | Flying Blue |
|---|---|---|
| Primary airlines | Delta | Air France, KLM |
| Award pricing | Dynamic | Dynamic |
| Fixed published award chart | No | No |
| Amex Membership Rewards | 1:1 | 1:1 |
| Chase Ultimate Rewards | No direct transfer | 1:1 |
| Citi ThankYou Points | No direct transfer | 1:1 |
| Capital One Miles | No direct transfer | 1:1 |
| Promotions | SkyMiles Deals | Promo Rewards |
| Mileage expiration | Never | Subject to program rules |
Flying Blue offers more transfer options from major U.S. credit card programs and publishes recurring Promo Rewards.
Delta SkyMiles, however, can offer attractive partner award prices on specific routes, including the 80,000-mile Asia-to-Europe business class examples.
For Air France, KLM, and other SkyTeam awards, compare both programs before transferring points.

🎫 How to Book Delta SkyMiles Award Tickets
| Feature | Policy |
|---|---|
| One-way awards | Allowed |
| Round-trip awards | Allowed |
| Partner airline awards | Subject to availability |
| Online booking | Delta.com and Fly Delta app |
| Taxes and surcharges | Paid separately |
| Free stopovers | Not permitted |
The booking process is similar to purchasing a regular ticket, except that you select miles as the payment method.
Can You Book Award Tickets for Someone Else?
Yes. Delta SkyMiles allows you to book award tickets for other travelers without traveling with them.
| Question | Delta SkyMiles Policy |
|---|---|
| Book for family members | Yes |
| Book for friends | Yes |
| Account holder must travel | No |
| Advance nominee registration | Not required |
| Change the passenger after ticketing | Not permitted |
| Sell or barter award tickets | Prohibited |
You can use your own SkyMiles to book an award ticket directly in your spouse’s, family member’s, or friend’s name.
There is no need to transfer miles to their SkyMiles account first. However, once issued, the ticket cannot be transferred to another person.
🔀 Stopovers and Open-Jaw Itineraries
Delta SkyMiles does not offer free stopovers on standard award tickets.
| Itinerary Type | How It Works |
|---|---|
| Standard connections | Search as connecting itineraries |
| Multi-day stopovers | Book separate awards |
| One-way awards | Allowed |
| Open-jaw travel | Compare separate one-way awards |
| Multi-city trips | Price individual segments |
For example, if you want to fly Tokyo–Seoul–Bangkok and spend several days in Seoul, you generally need to book separate awards rather than add a free stopover.
💵 Delta SkyMiles Award Taxes and Fees
| Cost | Details |
|---|---|
| Required miles | Dynamic |
| Government taxes | Additional payment required |
| Airport fees | Depend on itinerary |
| Carrier-imposed surcharges | Depend on airline and route |
| Other applicable fees | Subject to ticket conditions |
Some Europe-originating long-haul partner awards can have high cash charges, as shown in the Amsterdam–Tokyo and Paris–Tokyo examples.
Always evaluate the combined mileage and cash cost rather than comparing mileage alone.
🔄 Delta SkyMiles Changes and Cancellations
Delta offers free changes and cancellations on eligible non-Basic award tickets originating in the United States or Canada.
| Situation | Policy |
|---|---|
| Eligible non-Basic awards originating in the U.S. or Canada | No change fee |
| Eligible non-Basic awards originating in the U.S. or Canada | No cancellation fee; miles redeposited |
| New flight requires more miles | Pay the mileage difference |
| New flight requires fewer miles | Difference handled under applicable rules |
| Basic award tickets | Different restrictions and fees |
| Awards originating outside the U.S. or Canada | Subject to applicable fare and award rules |
| No-show | Ticket value and miles may be forfeited |
Because Delta uses dynamic pricing, an award ticket may become cheaper after booking.
If your ticket qualifies for free changes or cancellation, you can compare the new price before deciding whether to modify or rebook.
Do not assume that the U.S./Canada free-cancellation policy applies to awards originating in Asia or Europe.
⏳ Do Delta SkyMiles Expire?
| Feature | Policy |
|---|---|
| Mileage expiration | Never |
| Activity required to keep miles | No |
| Booking for another traveler | Allowed |
| Mileage transfers | Available for a fee |
| Program violations | May result in forfeiture |
Delta SkyMiles do not expire due to account inactivity.
However, because award pricing is dynamic, having miles that never expire does not guarantee that future redemptions will cost the same number of miles.
🏅 Delta Medallion Elite Status
Delta Medallion is the elite status program within SkyMiles.
| Delta Status | SkyTeam Recognition |
|---|---|
| Silver Medallion | SkyTeam Elite |
| Gold Medallion | SkyTeam Elite Plus |
| Platinum Medallion | SkyTeam Elite Plus |
| Diamond Medallion | SkyTeam Elite Plus |
Medallion status is primarily earned through Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs).
Gold Medallion and above correspond to SkyTeam Elite Plus, which provides alliance-level benefits on eligible itineraries.
Detailed MQD earning methods, qualification thresholds, credit card strategies, and elite benefits are best covered in a separate Delta Medallion Status Guide.
🏁 Is Delta SkyMiles Worth It?
Delta SkyMiles offers several useful features: miles never expire, members can book awards for other travelers, eligible Delta Amex cardholders receive TakeOff 15, and select partner airlines offer worthwhile business class redemptions.
| Redemption | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Asia → Europe: 80K business class | Strong option |
| Japan ↔ Indonesia: 40K business class | Strong option |
| Europe → Middle East: 42.5K business class | Compare cash charges |
| Europe → Africa: 65K business class | Compare cash charges |
| Japan → South Korea: 15K business class | Secondary option |
| Europe → Asia: 80K business class | Watch for high surcharges |
| North America ↔ Asia business class | Not a primary sweet spot |
| North America ↔ Europe business class | Compare other programs first |
For U.S. travelers earning American Express Membership Rewards points, Delta SkyMiles is worth checking, but there is usually no reason to transfer points speculatively.
Search for award availability first, compare Delta SkyMiles against Flying Blue and other programs, review the mileage and cash cost, and only then transfer points to book.
