2027 Atmos Rewards Guide: How to Earn oneworld Sapphire & Emerald

Starting in 2027, Atmos Rewards members will be able to choose how they earn flight points and Status Points: by distance flown, price paid, or flight segments.

For travelers pursuing oneworld Sapphire or Emerald, this creates an interesting opportunity. Discounted long-haul Business Class tickets may generate substantial Status Points while also earning redeemable Atmos Points. Award tickets, the Atmos Rewards Summit Visa Infinite Card, and Global Locals benefits can help close the remaining gap.

This guide uses actual Business Class fares found on the Oman Air and Qatar Airways websites to compare two approaches: flying strategically and combining flights with existing credit card spending.

Atmos Gold provides oneworld Sapphire benefits, including eligible Business Class lounge access, priority check-in, and priority boarding.

Atmos Platinum provides oneworld Emerald, which adds access to eligible First Class lounges and additional priority services.

🔄 2027 Atmos Rewards: Distance vs. Price Paid vs. Segments

Starting January 1, 2027, members can choose among three flight-earning methods.

Earning MethodHow It WorksBest Use Case
DistanceBased on miles flownLong-haul flights and award travel
Price PaidBased on ticket spending or applicable partner earning ratesDiscounted long-haul Partner Business Class
SegmentsBased on eligible flight segmentsFrequent short-haul flying

Existing members who do not make a selection will remain on Distance. Members joining in 2027 will default to Price Paid.

Members can change their selection once per calendar year for future eligible travel.

Why Partner Business Class Matters

Under the announced 2027 Price Paid structure, eligible tickets purchased through partner airlines can earn based on flight distance and the applicable cabin multiplier.

Partner CabinAtmos PointsStatus Points
International Business / First250%250%
Domestic Business / First150%150%
Premium Economy100%100%
Economy50%50%
Discount Economy25%25%

The opportunity is straightforward: a relatively inexpensive long-haul Business Class ticket can produce significantly more Status Points than its price might suggest.

However, the booking channel matters. Partner flights purchased through Alaska or Hawaiian may follow different earning rules from tickets purchased directly from the operating airline.

The examples below assume the tickets qualify for the 2027 Price Paid international Business Class earning rate.

✈️ Two Real Business Class Fare Examples

Both fares were found directly on the respective airline websites for travel from February 1 to February 15, 2027.

CategoryOman AirQatar Airways
RouteMNL–MCT–FCO round-tripBKK–DOH–BCN round-trip
Fare FamilyBusiness ComfortBusiness Lite
Round-trip FareUS$2,087.10THB 70,085

Assumed Price Paid Rate250%250%
Projected Atmos Points~35,200~31,550
Projected Status Points~35,200~31,550

These are actual observed fares, not hypothetical ticket prices. The projected earnings are calculated from approximate airport-to-airport distances and assume all eligible segments receive the 250% rate.

Actual credited amounts may differ based on ticket eligibility, booking class, and the program’s distance calculations.

Oman Air: Manila to Rome via Muscat

The Oman Air itinerary departs Manila on February 1, 2027, and returns from Rome on February 15.

Flights are operated under WY flight numbers, connecting through Muscat.

The selected Business Comfort fare costs US$2,087.10 round-trip.

Oman Air website: Manila–Muscat–Rome round-trip Business Class itinerary and fare.

The Business Comfort fare includes checked baggage, seat selection, and lounge access. The airline’s booking page also identifies the fare as eligible for mileage earning.

With approximately 14,080 flown miles, this itinerary could generate around 35,200 Atmos Points and 35,200 Status Points under the assumed 2027 Price Paid rate.

That is already most of the 40,000 Status Points required for Atmos Gold.

Qatar Airways: Bangkok to Barcelona via Doha

The second example is a Qatar Airways Business Lite itinerary, also departing February 1 and returning February 15, 2027.

The Qatar Airways website displayed a round-trip total of THB 70,085, including taxes.

Business Lite is Qatar Airways’ lower-priced Business Class fare family. Its booking conditions differ from higher-priced Business Class fare families, including lounge-access and seat-selection benefits.

The itinerary includes four Qatar Airways-operated segments and approximately 12,620 flown miles.

If all segments qualify for the 2027 Price Paid 250% international Business Class rate, the projected earnings are approximately 31,550 Atmos Points and 31,550 Status Points.

For U.S.-based travelers, positioning flights to Manila or Bangkok must be considered separately. These fares are most attractive when the Asia departure point fits an existing trip or can be reached inexpensively.

🎫 Award Tickets Can Also Earn Status Points

An important feature of Atmos Rewards is that eligible award tickets booked using Atmos Points can also contribute toward elite status.

Starting in 2027, the earning method selected by the member determines how award travel contributes to status.

Earning MethodEligible Atmos Award Ticket
Distance1 Status Point per mile flown
Price Paid1 Status Point per 20 Atmos Points redeemed
Segments500 Status Points per eligible flight segment

Eligible award tickets can earn Status Points, but they do not generate another set of redeemable Atmos Points.

Price Paid: Redeemed Points ÷ 20

Atmos Points RedeemedStatus Points
15,000750
30,0001,500
45,0002,250
60,0003,000
100,0005,000

This creates a useful combination.

A paid Oman Air Business Class ticket may earn approximately 35,200 redeemable Atmos Points. Those points can later be used toward award travel, and eligible award flights can then generate additional Status Points.

However, redeeming points is not free. Atmos Points have an opportunity cost, and award bookings may also require taxes and fees.

The most efficient approach is to include award trips you already intend to take rather than redeeming valuable points solely to increase your status balance.

🌍 Global Locals: International Flight Bonus

Global Locals is one of the Atmos Rewards Communities and is particularly relevant to international travelers.

BenefitDetails
International FlightsAdditional 10% Status Points
International Award FlightsEligible award travel also qualifies
Eligible Points Transfers1 Status Point per 25 transferred Atmos Points
Destination ChallengeBonus Atmos Points and Status Points for visiting selected cities

Eligible international award tickets can qualify for the additional 10% Status Points benefit.

All earning calculations in this article exclude the extra Global Locals 10%.

This keeps the comparisons consistent without assuming how the bonus will stack with the new 2027 earning multipliers.

Global Locals: 25:1 Transfer Benefit

Global Locals also provides a way to earn Status Points when transferring qualifying partner points into Atmos Rewards.

Transfer PartnerStandard Transfer RatioRole
Bilt Rewards1:1Direct transferable points
Marriott BonvoyGenerally 3:1Additional transfer option
Bank of AmericaNot announcedPlanned 2027 addition

For qualifying transfers:

25,0001,000
50,0002,000
100,0004,000
150,0006,000

Transfer bonuses should not automatically be included in the qualifying base amount.

Alaska has announced plans to add eligible Bank of America points transfers in 2027 and expand relationships with additional financial institutions.

American Express Membership Rewards previously transferred to HawaiianMiles, but a direct transfer partnership with Atmos Rewards has not been announced.

For now, future transfer partners should not be included in a firm elite-status earning plan.

🌏 Global Locals Destination Challenge

Global Locals members can earn additional Atmos Points and Status Points by visiting designated international destinations during the challenge period, October 1, 2026, through December 31, 2027.

The 10 Eligible Destinations

Asia / OceaniaEurope / Middle East / Africa
Tokyo Narita (NRT)London Heathrow (LHR)
Hong Kong (HKG)Madrid (MAD)
Kuala Lumpur (KUL)Helsinki (HEL)
Sydney (SYD)Doha (DOH)
Amman (AMM)

3300600
44001,000
55001,500

71,0003,250
81,2504,500
92,5007,000
103,00010,000

Each qualifying destination counts once, and a trip may potentially include multiple different challenge destinations.

Eligible Atmos award flights can also count when all program requirements are satisfied.

Doha (DOH), for example, is part of the Qatar Airways itinerary discussed earlier. Travelers have reported receiving Destination Challenge credit for qualifying connections, although individual posting remains subject to Alaska’s program rules.

The early milestones are relatively small. Completing five destinations generates only 1,500 Status Points, while the final milestones provide much larger rewards.

For most travelers, this challenge makes more sense as a bonus on existing trips than as a reason to book additional long-haul flights.

💳 Atmos Summit: Status Points From Credit Card Spending

The Atmos Rewards Summit Visa Infinite Card is particularly useful when combining flying and credit card spending to earn elite status.

BenefitDetails
Eligible Card Spending1 Status Point per US$2
Account Anniversary10,000 Status Points annually, beginning with the first anniversary
US$60,000 Anniversary-Year Spending100K Global Companion Award
Regular PurchasesEarn redeemable Atmos Points

For existing Summit cardholders, the annual 10,000 Status Points should be considered before planning additional flying or spending.

Why US$60,000 in Summit Spending Matters

US$60,000 in eligible spending during a cardmember anniversary year can provide:

  • 30,000 Status Points
  • Redeemable Atmos Points based on purchase categories
  • A 100,000-point Global Companion Award

The Global Companion Award can reduce the Atmos Points required for an eligible companion’s award itinerary by up to 100,000 points.

It does not deposit 100,000 unrestricted Atmos Points into your account, nor does it directly grant 100,000 Status Points.

For cardholders with substantial existing spending and plans to travel together, this benefit can be an important additional source of value.

The spending qualification period follows the cardmember anniversary year, while elite-status earning depends on the applicable status qualification period. Those timelines must be coordinated carefully.

🏆 Strategy 1: Reach oneworld Sapphire With Oman Air + Summit

For Summit cardholders who will receive the annual 10,000 Status Points benefit, one discounted long-haul Business Class round-trip may be enough to qualify for Atmos Gold.

Earning SourceStatus Points
Oman Air Business Class Round-trip~35,200
Summit Anniversary Benefit10,000
Total45,200
Atmos Gold Requirement40,000
Above Requirement5,200

The Oman Air round-trip fare was US$2,087.10.

Under this scenario, additional Summit spending or award travel would not be required to reach Sapphire.

The Qatar Airways itinerary could also work:

31,550 projected flight Status Points + 10,000 Summit anniversary Status Points = 41,550 Status Points.

Both combinations depend on the relevant flight earnings and anniversary bonus posting within the qualifying period.

🏆 Strategy 2: Reach Emerald With One Business Class Trip + Summit Spending

Travelers with substantial organic credit card spending do not necessarily need two long-haul Business Class trips.

One alternative is combining Oman Air with US$60,000 in Summit spending.

Earning SourceStatus Points
Oman Air Business Class Round-trip~35,200
Summit Anniversary Benefit10,000
Summit Spending: US$60,00030,000
Total75,200
Atmos Platinum Requirement80,000
Remaining Gap4,800

The US$60,000 spending milestone also earns the 100K Global Companion Award.

How to Close the Remaining 4,800 Status Points

If relying entirely on additional Summit spending, another US$9,600 in eligible purchases would be needed.

Alternatively, existing award travel could reduce that requirement.

For example, redeeming a combined 60,000 Atmos Points on eligible award flights under Price Paid would generate 3,000 Status Points.

The remaining 1,800 Status Points could then be earned through an additional US$3,600 in eligible Summit spending.

This is attractive primarily when the credit card spending and award travel were already planned.

Spending more solely to reach elite status should be evaluated against the rewards that could be earned with other cards.

🏆 Strategy 3: Reach Emerald With Two Business Class Trips

Travelers who do not have high credit card spending may prefer to combine two discounted long-haul Business Class tickets.

Earning SourceStatus Points
Oman Air Business Class~35,200
Qatar Airways Business Class~31,550
Summit Anniversary Benefit10,000
Total76,750
Atmos Platinum Requirement80,000
Remaining Gap3,250

Together, the two paid itineraries are projected to generate approximately 66,750 redeemable Atmos Points.

Under the Price Paid award-ticket earning formula, redeeming 65,000 Atmos Points across eligible award travel would generate another 3,250 Status Points.

That would mathematically close the Platinum gap.

This is not a claim that a particular 65,000-point award has been found. Actual award availability, redemption pricing, and taxes must be checked separately.

The advantage is that the points earned from paid Business Class flights may help fund trips that also contribute toward elite status.

📊 Sapphire vs. Emerald: Which Strategy Makes Sense?

GoalMain StrategyBest For
SapphireOman Air + Summit 10K anniversary bonusExisting Summit cardholders
Emerald AOman Air + US$60K Summit spending + remaining Status PointsHigh organic spenders
Emerald BOman Air + Qatar Airways + Summit + award travelTravelers planning multiple long-haul trips
Additional EarningAward tickets and Global Locals transfersMembers with existing points or travel plans

There is no universally cheapest strategy.

For some travelers, credit card spending is the natural path because those purchases already exist.

For others, two discounted Business Class tickets may be a better use of time and resources.

Members who frequently redeem long-haul Atmos award tickets should also compare Distance with Price Paid before committing to a 2027 earning selection.

🏁 Conclusion: A Different Approach to Airline Status Runs

The major opportunity in the 2027 Atmos Rewards program is the ability to combine multiple Status Points earning sources.

Discounted long-haul partner Business Class tickets may generate substantial Status Points while also earning redeemable Atmos Points.

Eligible award travel can then contribute further toward elite status.

For Atmos Summit cardholders, the annual 10,000 Status Points benefit can make oneworld Sapphire much easier to reach. Higher spending can also support an Emerald strategy while unlocking the 100K Global Companion Award.

Global Locals provides additional ways to earn through international flights, qualifying points transfers, and the Destination Challenge.

The strategy: use discounted long-haul Business Class fares as the foundation, count existing Summit benefits first, and use planned award travel or eligible transfers to close the remaining Status Points gap.
