Delta SkyMiles American Express Gold Card(デルタ スカイマイル アメリカン・エキスプレス・ゴールド・カード) is one of the most interesting airline credit cards in Japan for frequent SkyTeam travelers.
The biggest selling point isn’t simply earning Delta SkyMiles. New cardmembers receive Delta Gold Medallion Status during the first program year, which corresponds to SkyTeam Elite Plus.
Starting with the second program year, spending ¥1.5 million during the Program Period earns Gold Medallion Status for the following period. That makes this card especially compelling for travelers who regularly fly Delta, Korean Air, China Airlines, Air France, KLM, or other SkyTeam carriers.

The real value is the ability to earn Gold Medallion and SkyTeam Elite Plus through credit card spending.
How Much Do You Need to Spend for Gold Medallion?
During the first program year, the primary cardmember receives Gold Medallion Status without first having to meet the annual spending requirement.
Starting with the second program year, your status depends on eligible spending during the Program Period:
| Program Period Spending | Delta Status | SkyTeam Status |
|---|---|---|
| ¥1.5M or more | Gold Medallion | SkyTeam Elite Plus |
| ¥1M–Under ¥1.5M | Silver Medallion | SkyTeam Elite |
| Under ¥1M | No Medallion Status through the card | — |
The easiest way to remember the structure is:
¥1M → Silver Medallion → SkyTeam Elite
¥1.5M → Gold Medallion → SkyTeam Elite Plus
The Program Period isn’t necessarily January through December. It’s based on the card’s annual Program Period tied to the membership or card-switch date.
Eligible purchases made with additional cards also count toward the primary cardmember’s spending requirement.
For someone who can naturally put ¥1.5 million of annual spending on the card, maintaining Gold Medallion is relatively straightforward.
Gold Medallion Means SkyTeam Elite Plus
This is the benefit that makes the Gold Card particularly interesting.
Delta Gold Medallion corresponds to SkyTeam Elite Plus.
That means the status isn’t useful only when flying Delta. It can also provide alliance-wide benefits when traveling on eligible itineraries with SkyTeam members such as Korean Air, China Airlines, Air France, and KLM.
SkyTeam Elite Plus benefits include more extensive priority services, including SkyPriority, which can make a noticeable difference on international trips.
For frequent SkyTeam travelers, this is a much more important benefit than simply earning 1 SkyMile per ¥100.
International Lounge Access Is the Key Benefit
The lounge benefit is where Gold Medallion and SkyTeam Elite Plus really separate this card from the standard Delta Amex.
Under the applicable conditions, eligible Gold Medallion primary cardmembers can access more than 50 Delta Sky Club locations, as well as eligible SkyTeam member and SkyTeam lounges.
The benefit can also include one accompanying guest.
However, this shouldn’t be interpreted as unlimited Delta Sky Club access simply for holding the credit card.
You generally need the combination of:
Eligible Japan-issued Delta Gold Card + qualifying Medallion Status + eligible SkyTeam international itinerary
Certain fares and itineraries are subject to additional restrictions.
For travelers based in Japan who frequently fly SkyTeam internationally, this can be one of the card’s most valuable benefits.
Earning Delta SkyMiles
Everyday purchases earn:
¥100 = 1 SkyMile
Eligible overseas purchases can earn:
¥100 = 1.5 SkyMiles
Eligible Delta purchases receive additional bonus miles.
Another useful feature is that Delta SkyMiles don’t expire, making the program relatively easy to use for travelers who prefer to accumulate miles over several years.
Still, an everyday earning rate of 1 mile per ¥100 isn’t exceptional by Japanese mileage-card standards.
That’s why I wouldn’t choose this card primarily as a high-earning mileage card.
A better way to think about it is:
Use credit card spending to maintain Gold Medallion / SkyTeam Elite Plus while earning Delta SkyMiles along the way.
Delta SkyMiles American Express Gold Card vs. Standard Card
| Benefit | Delta SkyMiles Amex | Delta SkyMiles Amex Gold |
|---|---|---|
| Annual Fee | ¥13,200 | ¥28,600 |
| First Additional Card | Free | Free |
| Everyday Spending | 1 Mile / ¥100 | 1 Mile / ¥100 |
| Eligible Overseas Spending | 1.5 Miles / ¥100 | 1.5 Miles / ¥100 |
| First-Year Delta Status | Silver | Gold |
| First-Year SkyTeam Status | Elite | Elite Plus |
| ¥1M Spend From Second Year | Silver | Silver |
| ¥1.5M Spend From Second Year | Silver | Gold |
| SkyTeam Status at ¥1.5M | Elite | Elite Plus |
| Eligible International Lounge Access | No | Yes |
| Lounge Guest | — | 1 guest |
| Best For | Occasional Delta flyers | Frequent Delta / SkyTeam flyers |
The standard card is essentially:
¥1M → Silver Medallion → SkyTeam Elite
The Gold Card adds another level:
¥1.5M → Gold Medallion → SkyTeam Elite Plus
That makes the decision fairly straightforward.
If your annual card spending is around ¥1 million and Silver Medallion is enough, the standard Delta Amex offers a lower-cost path.
If you can naturally spend ¥1.5 million or more and regularly fly SkyTeam internationally, the Gold Card becomes much more compelling.
Bottom Line
The Delta SkyMiles American Express Gold Card has a very specific value proposition.
Its biggest selling point isn’t the standard 1 SkyMile per ¥100 earning rate. It’s the ability to turn annual credit card spending into airline elite status:
First year → Gold Medallion → SkyTeam Elite Plus
From the second year: ¥1.5M → Gold Medallion → SkyTeam Elite Plus
For travelers who frequently fly Delta, Korean Air, China Airlines, Air France, KLM, and other SkyTeam carriers, SkyTeam Elite Plus, SkyPriority, and eligible international lounge access can make this card significantly more valuable than the standard version.
If you’re only looking for a card to earn Delta SkyMiles, the earning rate alone probably isn’t enough to justify choosing the Gold Card.
This card makes the most sense for travelers who can naturally meet the ¥1.5 million spending requirement and actually use SkyTeam Elite Plus benefits.
