ANA Visa / Mastercard Guide: Standard vs. Wide vs. Wide Gold vs. Premium

The ANA Visa / Mastercard, issued by Sumitomo Mitsui Card in Japan, is one of the main credit card families for earning ANA miles outside of the ANA American Express lineup.

There are four main tiers: Standard, Wide, Wide Gold, and Premium.

For most ANA Mileage Club members, the important question is not whether to choose Visa or Mastercard. The bigger decision is which card tier best matches your ANA travel and spending habits.

How ANA Visa / Mastercard Earn ANA Miles

Spending on Sumitomo Mitsui ANA Cards earns points that can be transferred to ANA Mileage Club.

The exact conversion rate depends on the card tier and mileage-transfer option.

Standard and Wide: Is the 2X Course Worth It?

The Standard and Wide cards normally earn:

¥200 = 1 Point = 1 ANA Mile

Cardholders who want a higher earning rate can use the 2X Course:

¥200 = 1 Point = 2 ANA Miles

The 2X Course requires an annual mileage-transfer fee of ¥6,600.

This gives Standard and Wide cardholders flexibility: keep the card inexpensive if spending is low, or pay the transfer fee when a higher ANA mileage earning rate makes sense.

Wide Gold: ¥200 = 2 ANA Miles

The ANA Wide Gold Visa / Mastercard(ANAワイドゴールドカード) earns:

¥200 = 2 ANA Miles

Unlike the Standard and Wide cards, there is no separate annual fee for the 2X mileage-transfer course.

For cardholders who regularly put meaningful spending on an ANA Card, Wide Gold is therefore much simpler to use as a primary ANA mileage-earning card.

Premium: ¥200 = 3 ANA Miles

The ANA VISA Platinum Premium Card(ANA VISAプラチナ プレミアムカード) offers the highest base earning rate in the Sumitomo Mitsui ANA lineup:

¥200 = 3 ANA Miles

That works out to approximately:

¥100 = 1.5 ANA Miles

This is the strongest everyday ANA mileage earning rate among these four Sumitomo Mitsui ANA Card tiers.

ANA Flight Bonuses: Wide Starts at +25%

One of the biggest differences between the four tiers is the bonus earned when flying ANA.

Card TierANA Flight Bonus
Standard+10%
Wide+25%
Wide Gold+25%
Premium+50%

This makes the Wide Card particularly interesting for frequent ANA flyers who do not need Gold Card benefits.

It provides the same +25% flight bonus as Wide Gold while keeping the card positioned below the Gold tier.

Renewal Bonus Miles

ANA Cards also provide bonus miles for continuing to hold the card.

The Standard card provides 1,000 ANA miles, while Wide and Wide Gold provide 2,000 ANA miles. Premium increases the benefit to 10,000 ANA miles.

Because this benefit is tied to card renewal rather than a large annual spending requirement, it is one of the simpler recurring benefits of holding an ANA Card long term.

Which ANA Visa / Mastercard Should You Choose?

ANA Visa / Mastercard: The Low-Cost Option

The Standard ANA Visa / Mastercard(ANA VISAカード/ANAマスターカード) is the straightforward choice for someone who wants access to the ANA Card ecosystem without moving immediately into a higher card tier.

If your spending is relatively low, you can stay with the standard mileage-transfer option. If your spending increases, you can consider the 2X Course later.

Its role is simple: basic ANA mileage earning with a relatively low cost of ownership.

ANA Wide Visa / Mastercard: Best for the Flight Bonus

The biggest reason to choose the ANA Wide Visa / Mastercard(ANAワイドカード) is the +25% ANA flight bonus.

If you frequently fly ANA but do not need the additional features of a Gold Card, Wide gives you the same flight bonus rate as Wide Gold.

That makes Wide primarily a frequent-flyer-focused ANA Card rather than an everyday-spending card.

ANA Wide Gold Visa / Mastercard: Best Balance for Most ANA Mileage Collectors

For many serious ANA Mileage Club members, ANA Wide Gold Visa / Mastercard is the sweet spot in the Sumitomo Mitsui lineup.

It earns 2 ANA miles per ¥200 without requiring a separate 2X Course fee while retaining the +25% ANA flight bonus.

If you want one ANA Card for both everyday spending and regular ANA travel, Wide Gold is arguably the most balanced option in the lineup.

ANA VISA Platinum Premium Card: For High Spenders and Frequent ANA Flyers

Premium has a very different target audience.

It offers 3 ANA miles per ¥200, a +50% ANA flight bonus, 10,000 renewal miles, and access to eligible ANA domestic lounges.

This makes it better suited to travelers who fly ANA frequently, spend heavily on the card, and can make meaningful use of its premium travel benefits.

👉 Compare ANA Cards

Visa or Mastercard?

For the ANA Visa and ANA Mastercard, the core ANA benefits are essentially the same.

Standard, Wide, and Wide Gold are available in both Visa and Mastercard versions, so there is little reason to treat them as separate ANA mileage strategies.

Choose between the two based on your existing card setup and preferred payment network.

At the top end, the Sumitomo Mitsui Premium product is specifically the ANA VISA Platinum Premium Card.

Conclusion: Wide Gold Is the Sweet Spot for Most ANA Mileage Collectors

If you simply want an inexpensive way to hold an ANA Card, the Standard card is enough. If your main priority is earning more miles from actually flying ANA, Wide already provides the valuable +25% flight bonus.

For long-term ANA mileage collectors, however, ANA Wide Gold Visa / Mastercard is the most balanced choice. It combines a stronger everyday mileage earning rate with the +25% ANA flight bonus without requiring the separate 2X Course transfer fee.

The ANA VISA Platinum Premium Card is better reserved for frequent ANA flyers and high spenders who can take advantage of the higher mileage earning rate and premium airline benefits.

ANA Card Family Comparison

The three ANA American Express cards fit naturally into the same overall ANA Card ecosystem. Comparing them side by side makes the positioning much clearer.

Amex PremiumANA American Express Premium Card¥187,000+50%ANA Group 2.5X, ANA Lounge, Priority Pass3.5%

The overall difference is straightforward: Sumitomo Mitsui ANA Cards emphasize lower holding costs and ANA mileage earning, while ANA American Express cards place more value on airport lounges, hotels, dining, and broader travel benefits.

The best choice therefore depends less on which card is the most premium and more on whether you prioritize ANA mileage earning, ANA flight benefits, or premium travel benefits.

Can Foreign Residents Apply for ANA Visa / Mastercard?

Foreign residents living legally in Japan can apply for ANA Visa / Mastercard cards, provided they meet Sumitomo Mitsui Card’s application and underwriting requirements.

Approval can depend on factors such as residency status, income, and Japanese credit history. Someone who has only recently moved to Japan and has not yet established a local credit profile may therefore find higher-tier cards more difficult to obtain.

Unlike American Express, Sumitomo Mitsui Card does not offer an equivalent to American Express Global Card Transfer that allows an overseas Amex relationship to potentially help establish a new Japanese Amex account.

For foreign residents planning to live in Japan long term and earn ANA miles, the practical choice is therefore between Standard → Wide → Wide Gold → Premium, based primarily on ANA flight frequency and expected card spending.
