The JAL Card lineup is one of the most straightforward ways to earn JAL Mileage Bank miles through credit card spending in Japan.
At first glance, the lineup can look complicated. There are five main card tiers—Standard, CLUB-A, CLUB-A Gold, Platinum, and Platinum Pro—plus different versions issued on networks such as JCB, Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.
The easiest way to choose is simple:
Choose the card tier first, then choose the card network.
There is also another reason JAL Cards have become particularly interesting: eligible Shopping Miles can earn Life Status Points (LSP). LSP are part of the JAL Life Status Program, a long-term status system in which points accumulate over time rather than resetting each year. Reaching certain thresholds unlocks lifetime status benefits and can provide a path toward JAL Global Club (JGC) membership.

Shopping Miles: The Core of the JAL Card Program
The Standard and CLUB-A cards normally earn:
¥200 = 1 JAL mile
By enrolling in JAL Card Shopping Miles Premium, the earning rate doubles to:
¥100 = 1 JAL mile
CLUB-A Gold, Platinum, and Platinum Pro include Shopping Miles Premium automatically.
| Spending Type | JAL Miles |
|---|---|
| Regular Spending | ¥200 = 1 mile |
| With Shopping Miles Premium | ¥100 = 1 mile |
| JAL Card Partner Merchants | ¥200 = 2 miles |
| Partner Merchants + Shopping Miles Premium | ¥100 = 2 miles |
For anyone planning to use a JAL Card for significant everyday spending, Shopping Miles Premium is one of the most important parts of the program.
Earn Up to 2 Miles per ¥100 at JAL Card Partner Merchants
JAL has a network of JAL Card Partner Merchants, where cardholders can earn twice the normal number of Shopping Miles.
Combined with Shopping Miles Premium, the rate becomes:
¥100 = 2 JAL miles
This means your actual earning rate depends not only on which JAL Card you hold, but also on where you use it.
Shopping Miles Can Also Earn Life Status Points
One of the most interesting features of the current JAL Card program is that eligible credit card spending can also contribute toward Life Status Points (LSP).
The basic conversion is:
2,000 Shopping Miles = 5 Life Status Points
Life Status Points are fundamentally different from JAL’s annual elite-status system.
Rather than resetting every year, LSP are accumulated over the long term through eligible JAL activities, including flights, JAL Card spending, and certain other JAL services.
In simple terms, think of LSP as your long-term progress within the JAL ecosystem.
Accumulating enough LSP unlocks different JAL Life Status tiers and benefits, with JAL Global Club (JGC) being particularly important for frequent flyers and mileage enthusiasts.
Shopping Miles Premium, JAL Card Partner Merchant bonuses, and eligible Add-on Miles can all accelerate LSP earning through credit card spending.
| Spending Type | Earning Rate | Approx. Spending for 2,000 Shopping Miles | LSP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard / CLUB-A without Premium | ¥200 = 1 mile | ¥400,000 | 5 LSP |
| Premium / Gold or Higher | ¥100 = 1 mile | ¥200,000 | 5 LSP |
| Premium + Partner Merchant | ¥100 = 2 miles | ¥100,000 | 5 LSP |
| Platinum / Pro Eligible JAL Purchases | Up to ¥100 = 4 miles | About ¥50,000 | 5 LSP |
How flights earn LSP, how many LSP are required for JGC, and whether JGC can be earned entirely through credit card spending will be covered separately in my JAL Global Club guide.
Frequent JAL Flyers: CLUB-A Is Where the Difference Begins
If you only care about everyday spending, a Standard card with Shopping Miles Premium can already earn ¥100 = 1 mile.
The real advantage of CLUB-A and higher tiers is JAL flight bonuses.
| Flight Benefit | Standard | CLUB-A or Higher |
|---|---|---|
| First Flight After Enrollment | 1,000 miles | 5,000 miles |
| First Flight Each Year | 1,000 miles | 2,000 miles |
| Flight Bonus | Flight Miles +10% | Flight Miles +25% |
This is why CLUB-A is primarily an upgrade for people who actually fly JAL, rather than simply a better card for everyday spending.
CLUB-A Gold: The Best Overall Balance
For travelers who both fly JAL and use their JAL Card for everyday purchases, I think CLUB-A Gold offers the best overall balance.
It includes the main CLUB-A flight benefits, including the 25% Flight Miles bonus, while Shopping Miles Premium is automatically included.
Regular spending therefore earns:
¥100 = 1 JAL mile
For someone who wants a simple combination of JAL flight benefits + everyday mileage earning, CLUB-A Gold is the tier I would use as the baseline.
Platinum: Up to 4 Miles per ¥100 on Eligible JAL Purchases
The major difference between JAL Platinum and CLUB-A Gold is Add-on Miles.
When eligible JAL Group purchases such as qualifying JAL airfare are charged to a Platinum card, the earning structure can look like this:
| Eligible JAL Purchase | JAL Miles |
|---|---|
| Base Shopping Miles | 1 mile / ¥100 |
| JAL Card Partner Merchant Bonus | +1 mile / ¥100 |
| Add-on Miles | +2 miles / ¥100 |
| Total | 4 miles / ¥100 |
That means eligible JAL airfare can earn:
Up to 4 JAL miles per ¥100
The eligible Shopping Miles, partner merchant miles, and Add-on Miles can also contribute toward LSP.
You Still Earn Miles When You Actually Fly
The 4 miles per ¥100 above are earned from paying for eligible JAL airfare with the credit card.
When you actually take the flight, you can separately earn Flight Miles based on the route and eligible booking class or fare.
Platinum also receives the JAL Card:
Flight Miles +25% bonus
So there are two separate earning opportunities:
Buy eligible JAL airfare → Up to 4 miles per ¥100
Fly the ticket → Flight Miles + 25% JAL Card flight bonus
Because Flight Miles are based on the flight rather than simply the amount charged to the card, these two earning methods should not be combined into one fixed return rate.
This is what makes Platinum particularly attractive for travelers who both purchase a significant amount of JAL airfare and actually fly JAL frequently.
Platinum Pro: Designed for High Spenders
JAL JCB Platinum Pro sits at the top of the JAL Card lineup and is geared much more heavily toward high annual spending.
| Platinum Pro Feature | Benefit |
|---|---|
| Regular Spending | ¥100 = 1 mile |
| Eligible JAL Purchases | Up to ¥100 = 4 miles |
| Enrollment / Renewal Bonus | 8,000 miles |
| Annual Spending Bonus | Up to 20,000 miles |
| Shopping Miles Premium | Included / Automatic |
However, there is an important distinction for anyone pursuing Life Status Points:
Not every JAL mile you earn counts toward LSP.
Credit card-based LSP earning is tied to eligible JAL Card Shopping Miles, so bonus miles should not automatically be treated as Shopping Miles that can generate LSP.
If your ultimate goal is JGC, simply choosing the card that awards the largest number of bonus miles is not necessarily the best strategy.
JCB vs. Visa vs. Mastercard vs. American Express
The large number of card networks is what makes the JAL Card lineup appear more complicated than it really is.
I recommend choosing in this order:
Choose the Grade First, Then the Network
Start with:
Standard → CLUB-A → CLUB-A Gold → Platinum → Platinum Pro
Once you know which tier fits your needs, choose among the available JCB, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or other versions.
The core JAL benefits within the same grade are generally similar. The differences are more likely to come from card issuer benefits, lounge access, payment features, and other card-specific perks.
Not every network offers all five tiers, so there is little reason to treat every JCB, Visa, and Mastercard version as a completely separate JAL Card.
Which JAL Card Should You Choose?
| Your Priority | Best Choice |
|---|---|
| Lowest-cost way to earn JAL Miles | Standard |
| Significant everyday spending on a Standard card | Standard + Shopping Miles Premium |
| Frequent JAL flights | CLUB-A |
| JAL flights + everyday spending | CLUB-A Gold |
| Significant JAL airfare purchases | Platinum |
| Very high annual credit card spending | Platinum Pro |
| Best overall balance | CLUB-A Gold |
Can Foreign Residents in Japan Apply for a JAL Card?
Yes. Foreign residents can apply for JAL Cards as long as they meet the eligibility and underwriting requirements of the applicable card issuer.
In general, applicants should have legal residency and an established financial base in Japan, with the ability to make card payments through the required Japanese payment methods.
Because different JAL Card versions are issued through different financial institutions, underwriting requirements can vary between JCB, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and other versions.
For someone who has recently moved to Japan, establishing a stable residence, income, and Japanese credit history before applying will generally make the process easier.
Conclusion
Despite the large number of JAL Card designs and networks, the lineup becomes much easier to understand when divided into five main tiers:
Standard — Low-cost JAL mileage earning.
CLUB-A — Better benefits for frequent JAL flyers.
CLUB-A Gold — Best balance between flying and everyday spending.
Platinum — Best suited to significant JAL airfare purchases and frequent JAL travel.
Platinum Pro — Designed for high-spending JAL customers.
For most people who regularly fly JAL and also want to earn miles through everyday spending, I consider CLUB-A Gold the sweet spot of the lineup.
But JAL Card spending can go beyond simply earning redeemable miles:
2,000 Shopping Miles = 5 LSP
Life Status Points accumulate over the long term and contribute toward JAL Life Status Program milestones, including the path toward JAL Global Club.
That gives JAL Cards two distinct strategies:
Credit Card Spending → JAL Miles → Award Travel
and
Credit Card Spending + Flying → Life Status Points → Long-Term JAL Status / JGC
I will cover the second strategy separately in my JAL Global Club (JGC) guide, including how many LSP are required, how flying contributes, whether JGC can be earned without flying, and which strategy is the fastest.
