Citi offers five AAdvantage credit cards ranging from a no-annual-fee card to a premium card with full Admirals Club Membership.

For international travelers, Platinum Pro at 125K Loyalty Points is an especially important sweet spot because it already provides oneworld Emerald status.

Among the three major global airline alliances, oneworld is unique in offering an alliance-wide elite tier with access to eligible First Class lounges. This makes oneworld Emerald particularly valuable for international travelers.

How Much Do You Need to Spend for AAdvantage Status?

The table below assumes eligible credit card spending earns approximately 1 Loyalty Point per US$1.

The 2X, 3X, or 4X AAdvantage Miles earning rates on these cards do not mean 2X, 3X, or 4X Loyalty Points.

* Globe Card assumes 12 qualifying American Airlines flight segments during the qualification year, earning the maximum 15,000 Flight Streak Loyalty Points. “Flight LP” represents the additional Loyalty Points earned from the flights themselves.

Citi AAdvantage Globe Card: Best for Frequent AA Flyers

The Globe Card earns a 5,000 Loyalty Points Flight Streak Bonus after every four qualifying American Airlines flight segments, up to:

12 qualifying segments → 15,000 bonus Loyalty Points

Those 12 flights can also earn Loyalty Points on their own.

Therefore, reaching Platinum Pro is better expressed as:

US$110K in card spending − Loyalty Points earned from the 12 flights

For example, if those flights generate 10K Loyalty Points:

100K spending LP + 10K flight LP + 15K Flight Streak = 125K LP

That is enough for AAdvantage Platinum Pro and oneworld Emerald.

Citi AAdvantage Executive Card: Best for High Spending

The Executive Card takes a different approach.

Loyalty Points ThresholdBonus
50K LP+10K LP
90K LP+10K LP
165K LP+10K LP
240K LP+10K LP
Maximum+40K LP

This reduces the amount of card spending required for several elite tiers:

Platinum: US$65K spending → 65K + 10K = 75K LP

Platinum Pro: US$105K spending → 105K + 20K = 125K LP

Executive Platinum: US$170K spending → 170K + 30K = 200K LP

For travelers relying primarily on credit card spending, the Executive Card is the fastest of the five cards to reach Platinum Pro / oneworld Emerald.

Loyalty Point Rewards Are Not Elite Status Levels

The 60K / 100K / 175K / 250K Loyalty Point Rewards thresholds should not be confused with AAdvantage Elite Status requirements.

Bottom Line

For occasional American Airlines travelers, Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select already covers the most useful benefits.

For travelers pursuing elite status, the real comparison is:

Globe = Fly more

Executive = Spend more

The most interesting target for miles enthusiasts is arguably 125K Loyalty Points. At that point, AAdvantage Platinum Pro already provides oneworld Emerald, including access to eligible oneworld First Class lounges, without needing to reach the 200K Loyalty Points required for Executive Platinum.
