JAL Mileage Bank Complete Guide: Transfer Partners, Award Charts & Stopover Rules

JAL Mileage Bank (JMB) is Japan Airlines’ frequent flyer program. In addition to redeeming miles for JAL-operated flights, members can book partner airline awards and combine multiple oneworld carriers into a single itinerary.

What makes JAL Mileage Bank particularly interesting is its distance-based partner award pricing. Unlike programs that price every flight separately, JMB Partner Airlines Awards and oneworld Awards calculate mileage requirements using the total distance of an eligible itinerary.

This guide covers how to earn and transfer JAL miles, the complete partner award charts, stopover and open-jaw rules, family redemptions, booking procedures, cancellation fees, and elite status.

✈️ What Is JAL Mileage Bank?

JAL Mileage Bank offers three main ways to redeem miles for flights.

Award TypeEligible AirlinesPricingKey Feature
JAL AwardsJapan AirlinesRoute, cabin, and applicable PLUS pricingJAL domestic and international flights
JMB Partner AwardsOne partner airlineTotal itinerary distanceUp to 3 stopovers
oneworld AwardsMultiple oneworld airlinesTotal itinerary distanceUp to 7 stopovers

Both partner award programs allow one-way and multi-city itineraries. The main differences are how airlines can be combined and the limits on flight segments and stopovers.

💳 How to Earn JAL Miles

Earning MethodHow It Works
JAL flightsEarn based on route, fare, and booking class
Partner airline flightsEarn according to each airline’s JMB earning chart
Credit card transfersConvert eligible bank rewards into JAL miles
JAL CardEarn JAL miles through eligible card spending in Japan
Hotels and other partnersEarn according to individual partner rules

For paid flights on partner airlines, check the booking class before crediting miles to JMB. Some discounted fares earn reduced mileage or no miles.

🔄 Which Credit Card Points Transfer to JAL?

U.S. Credit Card Transfer Partners

For U.S.-based travelers, transferable credit card points provide a practical way to build a JAL Mileage Bank balance.

Rewards ProgramTransfer Ratio to JAL
Citi ThankYou Points1:1 with eligible accounts
Bilt Rewards1:1
Capital One Miles1,000 points → 750 miles

Citi transfer eligibility and ratios depend on the cards associated with your ThankYou account. Not every Citi card provides the same transfer benefits.

Japanese Credit Cards and Points

Card or Rewards ProgramJAL Earning or Transfer Rate
JAL CardGenerally 1 mile per ¥100–¥200 spent, depending on the card and program
American Express Membership Rewards3,000 points → 1,000 miles; 2,500 points → 1,000 miles with MR Plus

Eligible JAL Cards enrolled in Shopping Mile Premium earn 1 mile per ¥100 on regular purchases. Some premium JAL Cards include this benefit.

Japanese American Express Membership Rewards operates separately from the U.S. program, with different airline partners and transfer ratios.

🥇 JAL-Operated Awards: Standard Pricing and PLUS

JAL has separate award systems for domestic and international flights.

Award TypeHow Pricing Works
Domestic flight awardsBased on route and cabin
International standard awardsPublished base mileage by route and cabin
JAL International Award Ticket PLUSAdditional miles may unlock availability on eligible flights
International First ClassPLUS pricing does not apply

JAL International Award Ticket PLUS is not a fixed surcharge. The required mileage can vary by flight and availability.

First Class redemptions require seats released at the applicable standard award level.

China Eastern also has additional routing restrictions. Its partner awards may require telephone booking rather than online booking.

The important distinction is that JMB Partner Awards already permit multi-city stopovers. You do not need a oneworld Award unless you want to combine eligible oneworld airlines or use its broader itinerary limits.

Not every partner airline offers every cabin. For example, a First Class award is not available on certain partners, including Air France, Korean Air, Malaysia Airlines, and Emirates.

On two-cabin American Airlines flights and eligible Alaska Airlines-operated flights, domestic First Class may be priced at the Business Class award level.

🛑 Stopover, Open-Jaw, and Transit Rules

The ability to include multiple stopovers is one of the most useful features of JAL’s distance-based awards.

RuleJMB Partner Awardoneworld Award
Maximum flight segmentsGenerally 68
Maximum stopovers37
Maximum surface sectors11
Surface sector counts as stopoverYesYes
Surface sector distance included in pricingNoNo
Maximum visits to one city33
Maximum stopovers in one city11

What Counts as a Stopover?

A stopover generally means staying in a city for more than 24 hours.

A surface sector also counts as one stopover, regardless of how long you stay.

What Is a Surface Sector?

A surface sector occurs when you arrive in one city and depart from another, arranging transportation between those cities independently.

JAL excludes the surface sector’s distance from the total mileage used for award pricing. However, the surface sector must still satisfy JAL’s routing restrictions.

What Counts as a Connection?

A connection of 24 hours or less generally does not count as a stopover.

The itinerary must still meet all applicable routing rules, even when the number of stops and flight segments is within the published limits.

Important Routing Restrictions

  • A maximum of one surface sector is allowed.
  • A city may appear no more than three times within the itinerary.
  • Only one stopover is permitted in the same city.
  • For oneworld Awards originating in Japan, stopovers within Japan are not permitted.
  • Itineraries cannot return to their country of origin and then continue onward to a third country.
  • Certain itineraries involving U.S., Canadian, or Mexican cities are restricted by air transportation rules.

👨‍👩‍👧 Can You Book JAL Awards for Family Members?

Yes. JAL miles may be used for eligible family members, even when the account holder is not traveling.

However, JMB does not allow unrestricted award bookings for unrelated friends or other third parties.

Passenger RelationshipEligible
Account holderYes
Spouse or qualifying partnerYes
Parents and childrenYes
Grandparents and grandchildrenYes
SiblingsYes
Qualifying relatives by marriageYes
Friends and unrelated travelersNo

JAL’s eligible passenger rules generally cover the member, spouse or qualifying partner, relatives within the second degree of kinship, and specified relatives by marriage.

JAL may request documentation to verify the relationship.

Can You Transfer Miles to Family Members?

Booking an award for an eligible relative is different from transferring miles between JMB accounts.

Ordinary JMB accounts do not permit unrestricted mileage transfers. Eligible members of designated family programs may be able to combine miles for award redemption under separate rules.

🔍 How to Search for JAL Award Availability

StepAction
1Sign in to JAL Mileage Bank
2Choose the appropriate award program
3Enter your origin, destination, and travel dates
4Add destinations for a multi-city itinerary
5Check eligible award seats on each flight
6Review total mileage and cash charges

A flight showing award availability on its own does not guarantee that it can be combined with every other flight in a multi-city itinerary.

For complicated itineraries, check the full routing before transferring credit card points.

🎫 How to Book JAL Partner Awards

Use the JAL Partner Award Booking Portal to search and book eligible partner awards.

StepWhat to Check
Select award typeJMB Partner or oneworld
Choose flightsAirline, date, and cabin
Review itineraryStopovers, surface sectors, and connections
Confirm pricingMiles, taxes, and carrier-imposed charges
Complete bookingConfirm ticket issuance and e-ticket details

Some partner awards and complex itineraries may require assistance from JAL.

The number of destinations that can be entered manually in the booking interface may also differ from the maximum number of permitted flight segments.

💰 Cancellation, Changes, and Award Ticket Fees

Refund of wholly unused awardsAvailable when refund conditions are met
Award refund fee¥3,100 per ticket
Flight date changesPermitted under applicable conditions

JMB Partner and oneworld Awards do not always need to be canceled and rebooked simply to change a flight date or flight number.

Changes remain subject to award availability and the applicable ticket rules.

The refund policy for a completely unused ticket should not be assumed to apply to a partially flown itinerary.

⏳ When Do JAL Miles Expire?

Standard JAL Mileage Bank miles expire at the end of the 36th month following the month in which they were earned.

Unlike some airline loyalty programs, ordinary qualifying activity does not continuously reset the expiration date of all existing JAL miles.

Certain eligible elite members receive different expiration treatment.

For travelers transferring U.S. credit card points, this makes it particularly important to avoid speculative transfers without a specific redemption plan.

🏆 JAL Elite Status: FLY ON, Life Status Points, and JGC

JAL has separate systems for annual elite qualification and long-term membership recognition.

FLY ON Elite Status

🏁 Final Thoughts: When Is JAL Mileage Bank Worth Using?

JAL Mileage Bank offers more than award flights operated by Japan Airlines. Its two distance-based partner redemption systems create additional possibilities for travelers planning complex itineraries.

JMB Partner Awards are best suited to itineraries using a single partner airline, including eligible round-trip and multi-city bookings.

oneworld Awards are useful when combining multiple oneworld airlines and taking advantage of their larger flight segment and stopover allowances.

For U.S. travelers, the most practical strategy is to compare the total itinerary distance, confirm award availability, evaluate taxes and surcharges, and only then transfer eligible credit card points.

Understanding these rules makes JAL Mileage Bank a valuable additional option alongside other transferable-points airline programs.
