American Airlines AAdvantage Guide: Award Charts, Partners & Rules
American Airlines AAdvantage is the loyalty program of American Airlines and a member of the oneworld alliance. Beyond redeeming miles for American Airlines flights, members can use AAdvantage miles to book award tickets on partner airlines such as Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, and Qatar Airways.
One of the biggest advantages of AAdvantage is its region-based partner award chart. Unlike distance-based programs, partner award pricing primarily depends on the origin region, destination region, and cabin class. This creates opportunities for intra-Asia awards, transatlantic business class flights, and other oneworld partner redemptions.
This guide covers how to earn AAdvantage miles, partner airlines, five major award charts, real booking examples, award holds, stopover rules, cancellation policies, and AAdvantage elite status.

📊 American Airlines AAdvantage Partner Award Chart
AAdvantage partner awards are primarily priced according to origin region, destination region, and cabin class.
The following five charts show starting mileage requirements per person, one way, excluding government taxes and carrier-imposed surcharges. Economy prices reflect regular Main Cabin rates rather than off-peak rates.
🇺🇸 North America to Asia Award Chart
| Destination | Economy | Premium Economy | Business | First |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Asia Region 1 | 35,000 | 50,000 | 60,000 | 80,000 |
| Asia Region 2 | 37,500 | 50,000 | 70,000 | 110,000 |
For this chart, the North American origin region includes the contiguous 48 U.S. states and Canada. Alaska and Hawaii are classified separately.
🌏 Intra-Asia Award Chart
| Region | Economy | Premium Economy | Business | First |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Asia 1 to Asia 1 | 12,500 | 17,500 | 20,000 | 30,000 |
| Asia 1 to Asia 2 | 20,000 | 25,000 | 30,000 | 40,000 |
| Asia 2 to Asia 2 | 17,500 | 20,000 | 22,500 | 32,500 |
Within Asia Region 2, economy awards start at 17,500 miles, while business class awards start at 22,500 miles.
However, actual business class availability depends on whether partner airlines release eligible award seats to AAdvantage.
🌎 North America to South America Award Chart
| Destination | Economy | Premium Economy | Business | First |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| South America Region 1 | 20,000 | — | 30,000 | 55,000 |
| South America Region 2 | 30,000 | 40,000 | 57,500 | 85,000 |
These are partner award rates. American Airlines-operated flights use dynamic pricing and should not be assumed to follow this chart.
🇪🇺 North America to Europe Award Chart
| Destination | Economy | Premium Economy | Business | First |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Europe | 30,000 | 40,000 | 57,500 | 85,000 |
Partners such as Finnair, Iberia, and British Airways offer transatlantic redemption opportunities. Taxes and carrier-imposed surcharges can vary significantly between airlines.
🇪🇺 Intra-Europe Award Chart
| Region | Economy | Premium Economy | Business | First |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Within Europe | 12,500 | 17,500 | 22,500 | — |
These charts represent published starting rates. Actual award availability and final mileage requirements are determined by the American Airlines booking system.
The official Business / First category refers to the highest cabin on a two-cabin aircraft or business class on a three-cabin aircraft. The separate First category applies to first class on three-cabin aircraft.
A published cabin price does not mean every airline or route offers that cabin.
🌍 Understanding AAdvantage Award Regions
AAdvantage award regions do not always match conventional geographic boundaries. Understanding these classifications is essential when using the partner award chart.
| Award Region | Countries and Territories |
|---|---|
| Asia Region 1 | Japan, South Korea |
| Asia Region 2 | Taiwan, Hong Kong, mainland China, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, Cambodia, Brunei, Myanmar |
| Indian Subcontinent | India, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan |
| South America Region 1 | Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Manaus (Brazil) |
| South America Region 2 | Argentina, the rest of Brazil, Chile, Falkland Islands, Paraguay, Uruguay, Venezuela |
| Europe | Most European countries, Turkey, Morocco, Canary Islands, and other destinations classified within the region |
For example, Manaus is classified under South America Region 1, while São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro fall under South America Region 2.
As a result, two destinations within Brazil can have different award chart prices.
✈️ Real AAdvantage Partner Award Examples
The following examples were found through the American Airlines award booking system. All three are nonstop flights operated by partner airlines.
Japan Airlines: Seattle to Tokyo in Economy
| Item | Search Result |
|---|---|
| Route | Seattle (SEA) → Tokyo Narita (NRT) |
| Flight | Japan Airlines JL67 |
| Aircraft | Boeing 787-9 |
| Flight Duration | 10 hours 30 minutes |
| Cabin | Economy |
| Required Miles | 35,000 miles |
| Taxes and Fees | $5.60 |

This nonstop flight matches the regular economy award chart rate between North America and Asia Region 1.
Cathay Pacific: Hong Kong to Jakarta in Economy
| Item | Search Result |
|---|---|
| Route | Hong Kong (HKG) → Jakarta (CGK) |
| Flight | Cathay Pacific CX777 |
| Aircraft | Airbus A330 |
| Flight Duration | 5 hours 5 minutes |
| Cabin | Economy |
| Required Miles | 17,500 miles |
| Taxes and Fees | $45.30 |

Both Hong Kong and Indonesia belong to Asia Region 2, making this itinerary eligible for the intra-region economy award rate.
Finnair: Dallas to Helsinki in Business Class
| Item | Search Result |
|---|---|
| Route | Dallas (DFW) → Helsinki (HEL) |
| Flight | Finnair AY20 |
| Aircraft | Airbus A330 |
| Flight Duration | 10 hours 5 minutes |
| Economy | 30,000 miles + $5.60 |
| Business | 57,500 miles + $5.60 |

Both the economy and business class prices match the regular North America–Europe partner award chart.
These screenshots illustrate actual award search results. They do not guarantee year-round availability or establish that the redemption offers better value than purchasing a cash ticket.
⭐ How to Identify AAdvantage Sweet Spots
Because AAdvantage uses region-based partner pricing, routes with different flight distances may share the same starting mileage requirement.
However, an attractive award chart price alone does not guarantee a valuable redemption.
| Factor | What to Check |
|---|---|
| Award Region | Confirm the correct origin and destination regions |
| Award Availability | Verify that the desired cabin is bookable |
| Cash Fare | Compare flights on the same date and in the same cabin |
| Taxes and Surcharges | Include the cash portion of the award |
| Routing and Cabin | Check connections and mixed-cabin itineraries |
Economy class can also offer excellent redemption value. When cash fares are expensive and the required miles are reasonable, an economy award may be more practical than pursuing a business class seat with little or no availability.
Likewise, a low published business class rate is not particularly useful if partner award inventory is unavailable.
⚠️ AAdvantage Stopover and Routing Rules
| Rule | AAdvantage Policy |
|---|---|
| One-Way Awards | Permitted |
| Eligible Connections | Permitted |
| Free Stopovers | Not permitted |
| Multi-Day Stopovers | Require separate flight awards |
| Two Long-Haul International Flights | Require two flight awards |
| Domestic U.S./Canada One-Way Awards | Maximum 3 flight segments |
| Other One-Way Award Itineraries | Maximum 4 flight segments |
| Third-Region Connections | Subject to AA routing rules |
Unlike the stopover rules covered in the Atmos Rewards Complete Guide, AAdvantage does not offer free stopovers on partner awards.
The maximum segment allowance is not permission to construct any itinerary with that number of flights. Connections must still comply with American Airlines routing and award-ticketing rules.
🔍 How to Search and Book AAdvantage Awards
American Airlines allows members to search for award flights through its website and mobile app.
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Sign in to your AAdvantage account |
| 2 | Select Redeem miles |
| 3 | Enter your origin, destination, and travel dates |
| 4 | Check the operating airline and cabin for every segment |
| 5 | Review mileage requirements, taxes, and connections |
| 6 | Complete the booking and confirm ticket issuance |
Can You Hold an AAdvantage Award Ticket?
AAdvantage offers an award reservation hold option.
| Booking Window | Hold or Ticketing Requirement |
|---|---|
| 7–331 Days Before Departure | One-day hold available |
| 1–6 Days Before Departure | Immediate ticketing required |
| Latest Booking Time | 2 hours before departure |
| Certain Partner Airlines | Shorter hold deadlines may apply; follow the displayed deadline |
An award hold can be useful when transferring Citi ThankYou Points or coordinating travel with other passengers.
However, holding an award does not guarantee that a bank points transfer will be completed before the reservation deadline.
Other Booking Considerations
| Situation | Rule |
|---|---|
| Booking for Family or Friends | Members may redeem miles for another traveler |
| Multiple AAdvantage Accounts | Miles in separate accounts cannot be directly combined to pay for one ticket |
| Mixed-Cabin Awards | Verify the actual cabin on each flight |
| Ticket Confirmation | Confirm the electronic ticket and ticket number |
💰 AAdvantage Award Ticket Taxes and Fees
| Fee Type | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Government Taxes | Based on the itinerary and departure country |
| Carrier-Imposed Surcharges | Charged on certain partner airline awards |
Some British Airways and Iberia redemptions include additional surcharges. Two itineraries requiring the same number of miles can therefore have substantially different out-of-pocket costs.
🔄 AAdvantage Award Change and Cancellation Rules
| Item | Policy |
|---|---|
| Change Fee | $0 |
| Cancellation Fee | $0 |
| Changes to Itinerary | New mileage and tax requirements apply |
| Cancellation Deadline | Before departure of the first flight |
| Mileage Reinstatement | Ticket must be completely unused, unexpired, and canceled before departure |
| Reinstatement Deadline | Within one year of original ticket issuance |
| Ticket Validity | One year from issuance; travel must be completed within validity |
| Expired Award Tickets | Miles are not reinstated |
| Partially Used Tickets | Not eligible for standard full-mileage reinstatement |
| Tax Refunds | Refundable taxes and fees are returned; nonrefundable taxes are excluded |
American Airlines does not charge a standard fee to change or cancel AAdvantage award tickets. However, changing an itinerary may require additional miles or taxes if the new award costs more.
When modifying an award online, the original miles are returned to the AAdvantage account and the miles required for the new itinerary are deducted. Mileage reinstatement processing may take up to 72 hours.
Partner award reservations that cannot be modified or canceled online can be handled through American Airlines Reservations.
⏳ Do AAdvantage Miles Expire?
| Account Situation | Expiration Rule |
|---|---|
| General Members | Miles expire after 24 months without qualifying activity |
| Qualifying Earning or Redemption | Resets the 24-month expiration period |
| Members Under 21 | Exempt from the standard 24-month activity requirement |
| Primary AAdvantage Credit Cardholders | Exempt while the eligible credit card account remains open |
| Closing an Eligible Credit Card | Later of four months after closure or 24 months after the last qualifying activity |
| Expired Miles | Paid reactivation available within 24 months, up to 500,000 miles |
Qualifying activity includes eligible mileage earning and redemption transactions, as well as designated Buy Miles, Gift Miles, and Transfer Miles transactions.
Reactivating expired miles does not earn Loyalty Points, and the reactivation fee is nonrefundable.
🏅 AAdvantage Elite Status and Loyalty Points
AAdvantage uses Loyalty Points to determine elite status qualification. Loyalty Points are separate from redeemable AAdvantage miles.
| Elite Tier | Required Loyalty Points | oneworld Status |
|---|---|---|
| Gold | 40,000 | Ruby |
| Platinum | 75,000 | Sapphire |
| Platinum Pro | 125,000 | Emerald |
| Executive Platinum | 200,000 | Emerald |
The AAdvantage qualification year runs from March 1 through the last day of February. Earned status remains valid through March 31 following the next full qualification year.
Eligible paid flights, base miles from qualifying AAdvantage credit card spending, and selected partner activities can earn Loyalty Points.
Citi ThankYou Points transfers, Marriott Bonvoy points transfers, and purchased miles do not directly generate Loyalty Points.
For more information on earning miles and Loyalty Points through co-branded cards, see the Citi AAdvantage Credit Cards Comparison.
🏁 Final Thoughts
American Airlines AAdvantage offers a valuable combination of region-based partner award pricing, an extensive partner airline network, and flexible award change and cancellation policies.
For U.S.-based travelers, partner redemptions to Europe, Asia, and South America are worth exploring. Travelers in Asia may also benefit from the program’s intra-Asia award chart.
Ultimately, the value of an AAdvantage redemption depends on actual award availability, required miles, comparable cash fares, and the total taxes and fees—not just the published award chart.
